This piece has been kickin' around my brain for several months now and I finally did something about it yesterday.

Also gave me a chance to work on my improvisation and phrasing shifting between modes instead of sticking to minor pentatonics all the time.



Rhythm tracks are Epi SG ('59A4) on the left, Jolly Roger super strat (little '59) on the right. Both through clean channel on the tubemeister boosted with my Boss GE-7 and OCD.

leads are the Jolly Roger again, using only the lil '59, and through the overdrive channel on the tubemeister, boosted with only the GE-7.

Mic'd using an SM57, dead-center on a WGS Retro 30.

Oh man, I'd be thrilled if you'd lay down some sweet basslines!
I was thinking about doing it myself but realized that a) I'm not very good at playing bass b) I have no idea how to make cool sounding walking basslines.

I used Addictive Drums for the samples (used a brush-based kit), and for some of the softer parts I used their beats. Also programmed my own beats for some of the more basic parts. Addictive Drums by far has the most natural, authentic sounding drum samples I've ever come across.

If you're seriously down for recording some bass, I could upload what I have so far in .wav so you can import it into whatever and then you could send me back your bass parts so I can mix them back in.

p.s., I had to look up what Finnish Schlager is.... I'm not sure if I've ever heard it, but I think I know what you mean seeing as it's sorta upbeat and melancholy at the same time.

I'm gonna experiment a lot more with playing jazz in the near future. I feel like it's been calling me for a long time but I wasn't ever good enough to tackle it with any degree of success.

After writing this though, I feel like I might actually be able to work on it steadily and learn some things without feeling totally inadequate.

Dude!! Change the word "attempts" to "plays" in the title, had I not heard your metal band, I would have thought you were an experienced jazz musician. The tone and playing sounded great!

I've played the Tubemeister 18 head a couple of times and I loved the tone of the clean channel (on full 18 watts), usually on most micro heads I've played, the Clean channel always sounds like it was an after thought in comparison to the Gain channel, but not on the Tubemeister.

Off topic question....I've been curious about the WGS Retro 30 for a while. It sounds great in your recording but how is it for Drop Tuned metal riffage? Is it a tight speaker or is there a bit of sag to it?

Joebacca: the Retro30 certainly does stay tight with drop tuning and tons of gain. Certainly tighter than a Vintage 30. Also, there's an airy, almost chimey top end to it which helps to add articulation with high gain.
