Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

And I mean like amps and pods not really talking about pedals. Current issues I'm having with my amp has lead me to thinking about trying new things. I've never really played through a pod but I played whatever the latest spider amp is the other day and I was honestly fairly impressed with what I heard. At least for bedroom levels.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I've never done a whole gig per say with a L6 amp but a guy I use to play with had one and sometimes we would switch gear just for fun since he loved the sound of my strat and Blackstar HT40 1x12 combo. He had a spyder 2x12 SS combo and it could get loud (not as loud as my HT 40) but the trick is you have to really spend a lot of time playing wuth the EQ and settings to match what ever your guitar is.

But whenever I played with him his dirty tone always had this thin tinny edge to it which I'm not sure if it was his axe or amp but it worked for the band we were in at the time since he did most of the lead stuff anyway. (Mostly because dude didn't know any chords what so ever, not even how to play a power chord)

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I'm a tube guy and I would totally gig with digital, doesn't have to be line 6. The fender mustang amps sound really good. If I ever land a super steady bar cover band gig I would totally get one. I saw a guy do a Blues Brothers band with a line 6 Spider 2 120w and he used a tube screamer and a way in front of it and he sounded great, and I was shocked.

Also, the audience is never going to notice.

I do!

for bass I use a low down 400 head, it is kewel, nice for coverband type stuff

Im im not a fan of the Spider amps, but I've played through PODs since 2000.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I use an M9 when my band uses amps. When we use in ear monitors or record, I use an HD500 direct- when programmed right, it sounds really great.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I gigged with a spidervalve 1x12 for awhile.. It sounded great but sounded THIN mic'd up... could have been the sound guy though plus I did not play with amp stands then so my tone was probably SUPER bright

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I gigged a Line 6 DT25 (the current generation tube poweramp flagship amp) extensively for about a year?

Never had any reliability issues, and it certainly sounded good enough for drunk crowds! Eventually I still ended up selling it though - my "real" amps (65 Amps London Pro and Marshall AFD100) just had better tone for my ears. Imo as close as modelling tech is getting (and I love new, high tech stuff), it's still not quite there yet.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

"real" amps... lol

Honestly some people are elitists.. In my experience the most unlikely tube amps can be the best for another player but labelling amps that are under 2 grand as not "Real" is just plain stupid... rant over

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I'm not elitist at all - I love trying new technology, and often embrace the latest technology in the hopes that it's caught up with the analog world.

I've owned and gigged Line 6's original foray into tube hybrid amps, the Spider Valve, as well as the HD500, Boss GT6, DT25 and many more over the years. I've also had the privilege of being one of the first people in the country to review the Kemper Profiling Amp. A few months ago I reviewed the Blackstar ID260TVP solid state modeller. So... it's not like I'm down on modelling tech, or technological advancement. Quite the opposite, actually.

Please understand that by using the term "real" I'm being a little facetious :)

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

Well my bad for ranting about nothing then!

What did you think of the Kemper PA ? I have a engineer buddy that loves it but I have never tried it.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I gigged a DuoVerb head quite a bit and liked it a lot. NOt sure I ever gigged the Vetta I had but I used it for recording and I loved it, wish I didn't let it go when things were tight.

I haven't gigged my DT25HD and cab but I have used it quite a bit and I love it. I will be gigging with it after the New Year with a side project I am working on.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

I'm a line 6 user. I don't like the new hd series stuff that much, but I have had a podxt live for about 10 years and you couldn't pry it away from me. I just bought a vetta II combo for my main rig with my band. I always get compliments on my tone, but I've been using them for a long time.

I personally love them, but they take a lot of time to dial in. Once you get used to the models and how they react, you can set a tone in a matter of a minute or two. But at first, you can get trough a couple hours without realizing it. If you spend the time, you can get great tones from them.

For the studio, it would be an AMAZING tool. The profiles are very realistic - within limits of the original setting the amp was on when you profiled it. The further you move away from the EQ or gain settings, the more the program starts to extrapolate (that's what I think, anyway), and depending on the amp, this can cause your profile's tone and the amp's actual tone to diverge rapidly once you start tweaking drastically.

For live use, the rack version is probably a bit more practical (and less dorky looking, haha). Though personally I found that when jamming with a full band, the KPA (through a beefy 15" powered speaker), with a normal amp on second guitar, it seemed to get a little lost in the mix, which seems to still be a recurring problem for modelling solutions.

Re: Curiosity: Who here gigs with Line 6?

Huh .. .Guess I'm never goanna invest in one now :lmao:

I thought about it but it seemed iffy like the beginning of a new technology, they have not worked out the bugs yet

Nailed it. As much as I like modeling, profiling still has a ways to go. You're playing through someone else's mic'd up rig, and if it's not the sound you're looking for, you can't tweak it too far from the original sound. The Kemper has a single "tone stack" and everything starts sounding digital when you go too far out.
