Custom 4x12 - WHAT SPEAKERS TO USE?

I have an Ibanez RGA72QME with SD AHB-3 pups (the Mick Thompson ones), and I am getting a mesa triple rectifier head. I am buying an unloaded 4x12 cab that I need to find 2 more speakers for... I have 2 eminence governors already, and need to know what other 2 speakers I should pair with the governors for a good post-hardcore/metal/cleantone sound. Also what patterns like 2 gov's on top and 2 other speakers on bottom or x pattern or what? I've read around a lot and texas heats come up a lot but swamp thangs are said to pair well with governors. Any thoughts or :scratchch ideas?

Wizards. I had an Avatar 4x12 setup with Govs on top and Wizards on bottom that slayed! The Govs are mid focused with tight bass and controlled highs and the Wizards are a bit louder with more bass and treb. Sound fantastic on the bottom.

+1

if you play rhythm in your band the swamps will have a little less clarity but more lows and work out real well, but if you play lead Wizards all the way

A lot of people like the Gov/Manowar combo, similar to the V30/T75 combo, can't vouch for it though. I can see Swamps working if you plan to use/like a lot of low end, don't know how they pair with Govs, but with Wizards they are awesome for what you describe.

G12T75's.
Cheap on the used market and sound great with Governor/V30 type speakers.

Suppose I wanted the best of both worlds for versatility's sake... Could I get away with one swamp thang and one wizard both on bottom? (I know nothing about this stuff; I am a total beginner).

Thanks for your quick replies btw. :thanks::approve:

Sure you could, might be awesome. I remember reading someone having a similar setup with one red ryder instead of a swamp and loving it.

I would probably do the govs in an X with the wiz on top and the swamp on the bottom.

Re: Custom 4x12 - WHAT SPEAKERS TO USE?

You kind of limit yourself with the Eminence because their efficiency is so high...
They are so much louder than any other brand of speaker you really have no other choice.

Other brands of much better speakers WGS, Celestion, Scumback etc... can be mixed because of their similar efficiency ratings.

This higher efficiency and power ratings of the Eminence can cause a rather boxy, cardboard like tone. The one thing it is good for is getting greater headroom out of a smaller amp.

Nope

emi's are actually no more efficient than any other speakers, they just rate them differently--a g12h30 is just as efficient as a wizard, wizards just handle more power.

And they sound good

Also, to the OP--wizards get plenty of bottom, more than gov's for sure. If you want a little more low end out of your cab go wizards, if you want a lot more go swamps

Re: Custom 4x12 - WHAT SPEAKERS TO USE?

I finally bought and fitted the cab, and it sounds fantastic with 2 govs, a ST, and a wizard in a x pattern. thanks guys.

NOT SCUMBACK !!! They are very low efficiency compared to Eminence Wizard/Gov/Swamp Thang. You'll never hear 'em. Aaaand, they cost roughly double the price of Emi's per driver.

As for Celestions and others, any difference in sensitivity greater than 1dB in efficiency will throw off the balance between the drivers.

Uh ... what?! This is patently false.
