Custom 5 in a Strat

My last post about a Custom was saying how perfect the CC is for a Strat. Well...

I was putting my Strat back together, and since I have new pickups arriving in a few days, decided to swap the magnet and give the C5 a go. I love the CC's fatness, but missed the bite of a single in the bridge, so I was planning on going back to SSS. I think I'm gonna toss the Tex Mex neck and middle in, and roll with the C5 bridge for the time being. I've only spent a few minutes with it, but there's definitely no lack of bite, and it responds really well to the tone control. Think I may prefer the position 2 with the C5, as well.

The neck and bridge split might be cool option too. Does it sound as extremely scooped as I've heard.

It sounds scooped like a Strat. But extremely? No, but I tried it with a low gain Marshall model with the mids and treble pretty high, bass and gain pretty low, with the boost turned on. It would be very difficult to make this sound extremely scooped.

It's not as chewy as the CC, but I don't know how anyone playing bluesy rock, or just plain rock, would find this tone to be lacking in much of anything.

Re: Custom 5 in a Strat

I have a Custom 5 in a strat-like Ernie Ball SUB1, but that guitar is about the muddiest piece of wood, ever. The C5 'solves' that problem due to it being severely scooped, and now it is one of my favorite guitars. I don't think I'd like the C5 in a more balanced-sounding Strat, though.

Well, as a bluesy rock player, the C5 is too thin and bright from me. Lacking mids and warmth. Putting in an UOA5 makes it a great PU for what I play. An A8 would be my second choice. I don't play Fenders or use Fender-style single coils, so my ears aren't accustomed to playing with those kinds of tones.

Re: Custom 5 in a Strat

I have had the custom 5 in two guitars with different results. I loved it in a swamp ash body warmoth strat. It had a lot of bite and mixed well the the Jazz pickup. I didn't find it overly scooped and it was just what I was looking for. I then put another one in a mahogany body telecaster and could not get it dialed in. It wasn't bad just left me feeling kinda meh.
