Custom/59 Hybrid Review: Yet another satisfied customer...

Hey guys. OK, I know that theres been a bunch of reviews about the Custom/59 hybrid, but I just can't resist. I gotta post my own!

OK. Well, I sent a Zebra Custom 5, and a Black 59 to our buddy BachToRock to have him convert them into Hybrids. Since theyre both using Alnico 5s, I was getting back 2 identical pickups pretty much.

The guitars I am installing them in are:

1. Black 4 Conductor Hybrid: Homemade Ash hardtail Super Strat, with a Duncan Jazz in the neck.

2. Zebra 2 Conductor Hybrid: Les Paul Honeyburst Standard Plus, 2002. With a Duncan 59 in the neck.

(Well, before I continue, let me say that BachToRock went above and beyond the calll of duty, swapping the screw coils, to make sure that the black 4 conductor had the custom as the slug coil (should I want to tap it) and that the 2 conductor had the 59 as the slug coil - which works perfectly, because the LP already has a 2 conductor 59 in the neck.. I prefer it when pickup sets match up like that. )

First Test: Super Strat. All I can say is, Holy S!!! This pickup smokes. It really is exactly how BTR describes it. A perfect cross between a 59 and a Custom. Its got the bottom end of a custom, but more natural mids, and a more vintagey top end. Absolutely beautful sounds when strumming chords. Super detailed, but warm and lush. Overdriven, its a monster, but it really lets the wood of the guitar shine thru. Something that my Regular Duncan Custom and Distortions didnt do as much.

Next Test: LP. Again, WOWOWOWOW! This pickup is just getting A+s in every category. Bottom end, midrange detail, treble sparkle, everything is amazing. (I actually wound up adding an extra layer of black paper tape on top of BTR's black tape, to make it look a bit more "vintage" and match up with the 59 in the neck. But thats just me, cuz im crazy.) I feel like my LP finally sounds like I always wanted it to.

Very versatile, as it likes being in a heavy mahogany guitar just as much as a light ash guitar, both yeilding excellent results, and allowing the guitar to speak for itself. It also matches up perfectly with the JAzz and 59, both alnico5 vintage style neck pickups.

It's a cryin' shame that this isnt a regular production pickup. Cuz it totally kills.

BTR - THANK YOU!!! You do amazing work on these hybrids. I'm thinking about sending my Jazz and 59 necks to you for some hybridization as well...

Bachtorock is a great guy and one of my favorites here on the forums! I'm one of his earlier converted 59B/Custom Hybrid users, plus I use a Jazz/59N in my Les Paul...Great concept, makes all kinds of sense, great tone!

It was really nice of Pete to share this with all of us,plus he always offers a wealth of knowledge to all.

Glad you like the pickup.I can relate.

Pete's hybrids rock. The honeymoon is long over and I'm still loving my set of hybrids.

Re: Custom/59 Hybrid Review: Yet another satisfied customer...

i wonder if it will become a production pickup (cos a similar thing happened with the C5, it was a mod and then became a pickup).

I don't think it ever would, because DiMarzio holds a patent for a traditional side-by-side coil humbucker with a different wire gauge on each coil.

I'll tack on my mini-review here, rather than start a new thread. All I can say is, I'm with you guys on this one. The CC/59/A2 is just a great, clean pup. It manages to capture that classic "bridge twang" without any harshness or ice-pickyness. This would be a killer pup to install into one of those "bridge-only" style guitars. Because of the lack of harshness, you can roll the tone knob back and almost simulate a neck pup.

Let me add on a few comments about the other hybrid I built at the same time - the DDn/59n/A5 pup. This combo of coils had the same overall affect that the CC/59 hybrid did. That is, it smoothed out the basic character of either pup on its own. The DD/59 is higher output than the CC/59 but still not harsh. It makes for some great Benson-ish clean jazzy tones but also handles distortion great.

The common factor on both hybrids seems to be "smoothness" and lack of harshness. I'm guessing that asymmetrical coils helps to balance out any peaks an valleys of the frequency response of a normal pickup. You get the best qualities of both pups. The only possible down side to the hybrids, and it isn't much of a down side, is that you lose a smidgen of the original pups unique character. But thats to be expected since we changed the whole design of the pup.

btw - Here's the specs on my two 'byrds:

Hey Artie! The '59 coil is the back coil? Does it sound any different than BTR's way which I believe the CC coil is closest to the BR.

Revo -

I have one of each type of pickup. In my LP, the Custom coil is closest to the bridge. In my strat, its the opposite with the 59 coil by the bridge.

Granted they are in different guitars, but I can't notice a difference at all.

Re: Custom/59 Hybrid Review: Yet another satisfied customer...

Yeah... there is no discernable tonal difference except when coil tapping... the stud coil is the standard active coil when tapped.

Theoretically, you would want the hotter Custom coil closer to the bridge since the strings vibration is weaker at that point.
