Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

I finally used the SD Custom 78 and put it in my Swamp Ash Frankenstein. This pickup really finishes off the guitar; it needs nothing more. The tone is incredible!

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

DUH! haha. yeah it's an amazing pickup, if I owned that guitar it would have been the fist pickup I tried in it, and last.

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

Very cool Axe , didn`t I see it over at the VHlinks forums? And yes, the 78 is a great pup that will do much more than VH.

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

I seriously dig the Kramer "beak" headstock on that guitar!

As for the 78, it didn't do it for me. It wasn't bright enough and didn't seem to have enough harmonics. I switched it for a 59/Custom a2 hybrid and was much happier. Sure, it was hotter than what I wanted, but seemed to get the vibe much better than the 78. This is through a Metropoulos Plexi clone with Scumback Greenback M25 clone speakers, so of course, YMMV.

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

Nice job on the frankenstrat...real nice! Only difference I see in Eddie's orig, was that his bridge pup was angled a little more, but probably does not matter much.....What's said a ton and I truly believe, if you got the foundation tone there......It's all in the hands.....The rest is up to you!

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

Also, where did you get the neck? I love that classic Kramer headstock.........just great!!

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

Gearjoneser, that is all my handywork.
pixelpusher, Thank you!
MattPete, Thank you too!
Laney, I actually blueprinted the guitar in AutoCAD and based on the centerline of the guitar the pickup is angled to where the Low E and High E poles are offset by only 1/8" to 3/32".
I made the neck (and the body).
Here's a pic of the back of the neck. If you like the front this will really get you off.

Here's a terrible clip of me playing Unchained through this guitar.

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

I'm doing my Alder 5150 with a 1-Piece Maple Neck next. Is the 78 a good choice for the body/neck combination too? You know... different body wood might call for different pup. My VH Clones are for VH songs too so I'm going for that sound with my replica's.

With that setup you`ve got to use the PATB-3 Blues Trembucker. It`s not gonna look like your standard humbucker but it will kill in the guitar you described. If ya can`t live with looks of that pickup in a VH clone go for a 59 Trembucker. Eds 5150 Kramer was all about the A5 tone.

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

Well, Ed never was too much into the looks of his guitars, so maybe I should go for tone first and worry about the rest later.
Thanks!

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

Wasnt the body of the original Frankenstrat made of Hard Northern Ash (instead of Swamp Ash) which is almost like Maple?

Re: Custom 78 in my Frankenstein Replica

That's the story...
If I were selling this like EVH/Fender then I would probably do it out of Northern Ash, but this is for my own consumption. Actually I've put my Swamp Ash Body right next to a Lynn Ellsworth Northern Ash Body and grain, color and the weight were all the same, so I don't think there is as much difference as people might think.

1) The PATB3 is kick as for VH stuff. I use in my Mahogany EB/EVH clone

2) The 5150 kramer sounds more like a CC than a 59. I know he liked to say it was a 59 but I think he may have been spinning yarns again.

He could have been half telling the truth and using a Custom/59 hybrid with an A2 magnet. :) Wouldn't doubt it.

That's a sweet looking guitar, Divebomb. You did a great job on it. I especially like the beak headstock. :)

You think so , from all the `84 bootlegs , 5150, Live Without A Net, OU812 that guitar just reeks of the 59 A5 tone IMO. He has said in interviews that the 59 in that guitar was rewound but as far as EVH telling the truth in those days:beerchug:
