Custom 8/498T (alnico8) with covers - too middy in SG ?

Like I said on another thread, I have a standard SG with 490R/498T and I'm not 100% satisfied with them, and before trying any Custom, I'll probably try the 498T Alnico 8 mod.

The SG having a lot of mids, and many people being happy scooping them with pickups such as Custom 5, from what I understand, an alnico 8 498T (or custom 8) will enhance those mids.

I also use covers with my 498T, and I think (not sure though), it gives the pickup a little bump on the mids already (and tams a little the high end).

Would an alnico 8 (custom or 498T) with chrome covers be way too middy on an SG ?

Only one way to find out! I personally love my miss, so I don't think it would bug me. Only way to tell is to try it, and if you aren't satisfied change up. Magnet swap is an easy fix!

I love mids (they give the sound muscle), so an A8 498T sounds good to me. For warmth with less mids, you can try an UOA5 or A4.

Mids are cool! It won't be as middy as having, say an A2 in there. I think you'd get a great pickup, and since it is just a magnet swap, you can always try several things very easily.

Yeah I love mids too ! I was just concerned since I'm using covers with this SG (for stupid stylistic reasons I must admit !) if it would be too much !

But yeah, as I said in the other post, I was quite afraid by the SH-14 mid-scooped eq, so Alnico 8 sounds like a nice plan !

Custom 8 in an SG absolutely smokes!! Lots of mids, sure....but they are nice and broad. Makes the SG sound huge and punchy!

I think you guys sold me on this one !

Custom 8 would be a little bit more defined than 498T Alnico 8 I guess ?

Re: Custom 8/498T (alnico8) with covers - too middy in SG ?

Lots of people love the C8 in SGs. I never compared it to a 498T8, but a few people who have tried those A8s really dig them in SGs, and once you have the Custom pickup, it is a cheap and quick switch to a better tone there.

Re: Custom 8/498T (alnico8) with covers - too middy in SG ?

I'm back on this topic.

From what I understood, Custom/498T with Alnico 8 would give tighter bass, more mids, and warmer highs than the same pickup with Alnico 5 in it.

I know on my Les Paul, the pots are 500K. But on my SG (standard from 2011) I don't know. The magnet swapped pickups would go on the SG.

If it's 300K pots, would it be better to get some 500K pots along with the Alnico8 magnet ?

Re: Custom 8/498T (alnico8) with covers - too middy in SG ?

From what I remember, higher pot value equates to retaining more highs (?) More suck it n' see no doubt.

From what I've tried with A8 mags, things can also start to sound noticeably compressed, though I've only tried it in moderate output pups.
