Hi there, i am building a precision bass special (vintage rosewood neck, copper metallic refinished fender body, white pearloid pickguard, badass II bridge, big Gotoh tuners... coming along nice) and i am at the stage where i need to install the electronics.
i am going to use a SMB-4a music man pickup in the neck position - aka where the pbass pickup originally goes - as it was already amateurly routed for this when i bought the body and i already have 2 p-basses.
the body is routed factory for a jazz bass bridge pickup. i have narrowed the pickup selection down to two models, but i don't know which one i want to get. they are: STK-J1 bridge and SJB-3.
i will run both passive, without any eq... just straight to my 250k CTS pots, which are wired like a jazz bass (Tone-Volume-Volume). i also concidered trying to wire them with two push-pull pots. the body has an electrosocket side-jack, so i am not hurting for space on the pickguard.
since i am going to fully copper shield and ground each pickup and the cavities, do i need the hum-cancelling from the STK-J1? i like the way the SJB-3 looks, because the larger magnets would match the MM pickup, but SOUND AND TONE are the real objectives here. i like the sound of both jazz pickups pretty equally, and from the tone chart, i can't really pick which one will have an output of similar magnitude to the MM pickup.
i'd appreciate any and all advice on this, as i need to make up my mind soon. i just sold one of my basses and i really want to get this done before my band's next show.
also, any advice on add-ons (like a switch or button) to add treble. my rock band needs the growl and low end from the humbucker, but when i play with my jazz/funk band, i need a really high sound (like a jazz bass, but i hate the way they are balanced... i am a p-bass man.)... and advice on those circuits would be great.
