custom custom and '59

Would a custom custom in the bridge and a '59 in the neck of an SG sound alright.

The custom custom is ceramic and hard rockish. While the '59 is alnico 5 and blues rockish.

I just started looking into pickups, so do you guys think it would be fine to put these together, or should I get a custom 5, or what do you guys recomend. :burnout:

They'd probably work really well together, provided that you like the sound of the Custom Custom. I don't. I'm about to try my C-5 in an SG. I"ll get back to yo about it.

That combo works fine. The difference in magnets does not matter unless you don't like the particular sound.
The CC is a little more agressive than the c5.

Must agree!
I have the CC -59 combo in my strat and i'm happy with it!
Before the CC i had a JB and it was too bright.
Some swear on a CC - PG (or APII) Combo and on a Custom (or JB) - '59 combo.
I have the Custom with the pearly gates on another guitar.

do the pickup magnets matter if you're using them split together like in a PRS? I heard it'll not sound as nice if the magnets are matched in a split situation. true?

If your strat is dark, or don't want the very narrow and "closed" sound of the custom custom, I'd suggest an Alnico 2 bridge. Perfect. Not too scooped and bright, but not too focused and closed in the mids.

The custom custom is an A2 pick up. I've heard that combo is pretty darn sweet, but never personall tried it.

The bridge position in Strats (and all guitars) naturally has alot less bass than the neck position. The amplitude of the string's movement is alot less at the bridge so the pickup picks up alot of short upper harmonics and not as much of the longer low fundamental frequency wave.

For that reason, I would tend to go with a pickup with stronger bass for the bridge position and a pickup with less bass (to keep the rythym tone clear) in the neck position.

The 59N has alot more bass than the Custom Custom, IMO, so I wouldn't use that combination myself.

Instead, I'd go for the A2Pro neck or Pearly Gates neck if you want to use the Custom Custom.

Or the A2Pro neck or PG neck and a 59 Trembucker...which is exactly what I did go with.

The C5 has more bass and treble than the CC and the CC has alot more plucky, almost buttery mids.

To me, the CC has a "brown" sound like EVH...though it's hotter than what he used in his single pickup Strats.

The thing about the 59 neck that makes it so popular is it's nice lead tone....which is why it sounds so tubby on clean rhythm. Besides the guitar, pickups, and amp, you've got to consider what you mostly use your neck pickup for. If it's clean rhythm, you're much better off with an APII or PG. If you want a great gainy solo tone for your neck pickup, the 59 is great......ask Robben Ford.

I'm one of those people who swears by the CC bridge/PG neck. Very flexible, very cool mixes with both pups.
