Custom Custom is so bright

Hi guys, I have been wanting to try the Custom Custom for awhile now, and so I picked one up, and threw it in my single humbucker strat. Man it is just too bright with a 500k pot, I plan on swapping it out with a 250k and throwing a 3 way switch into the mix. On one side of the switch would be a capacitor rolling of some of the high end, not sure what size, recommendations are more than welcome. On the other side throwing a coil-tap.

Any thoughts on helping this sound out a little more? Or think i should pull this pickup and try something else, Thanks. By the way its a rosewood fretboard.

Wow. First time I've ever heard a CC described as bright.

I suppose if you got it used, the previous owner could have screwed it up by messing with it and setting the coils out of phase with each other. I accidentally did that with a Custom long ago and it SUCKS.:banghead:

I got it straight from SD, could be the Squier it's in making it seem brighter than normal? Its not over noisy, but it sounds like I have my wah on, cocked forward. I even kicked my treble down to 1 and it started sounding better.

I've heard this pickup can set you in the direction of the EVH sound, but doesnt sound like it.

On another note, anyone try those GFS VEH's? I always see them in the back of the guitar mags and I think they are only $30...

Now that you mention it it almost does sound out of phase, a bit brittle.... Hmmmmm I plan on heading into the shop today, and I will double check the wiring.

sounds thick and meaty in a Strat thru my 68 bassman halfstack.

Ok cool, well obviously something was wrong with it.... I will check it out, I am running it directly to a Marshall AVT 20 single tube amp, which IMO sounds very good for a 10" amp. By the way, thanks for the replies.

Make sure you solder the red and white together and tape them off. Black goes to positive. Green/silver soldered together go to ground.

Yeah it was mis-wired, my business partner wired it, and I never even looked at it, but I opened it, and the red and black were together and the white was to the volume pot...

Sounds good now, balanced and full. I guess it would have been easy enough to see if I would have opened it up, but I thought maybe thats how it was supposed to sound.

It should have fat highs, monster mid boost, and a not too tight bottom. should sound great in any strat. If not enough highs, crank the poles up on treble side. If bottom too loose, replace bass side poles with shorter ones (chop the ones there or replace with shorter ones.)

Yeah I brought it home tonight and plugged it in to my bigger amp, and it sounds really good with some high gain, its a single humbucker strat. When I kick it to clean it sounds pretty good, just not quite to my tastes being it is in the bridge. I like a warm clean. I have a few other strats, and I will probably match the Custom custom w/ a couple single coils, maybe even just another humbucker.
