Custom-custom, is this pup able to get mean?

Re: Custom-custom, is this pup able to get mean?

Sorry, don't know how to post clips. I haven't tried the Invader, but If you're into super highoutput pickups, it might work for you.

Hmm interesting, I'm still getting a Super Distortion though. Could anyone compare the CC with a SD?
I have plyed the super D and I currently have the CC. The CC sounds more full and has more personality and life to it than the super D and it has those intangables that a super D dosent. In my mind it sounds better than a super D but, its a matter of taste.

Hey Benjy I have a DC 127 too, it is bright. Body is poplar. Right now there's a Screamin Demon in there and it is killing me. Horrible match with the guitar.

I have been racking brain on gettting and Invader or a CC
Had you ever tried an Invader in your DC 127 and what was the result?
Could you put up any clips with your CC and DC 127 ?
thanks
I have played an Invader and I currently have the CC. The Invader is great for rythms, power chords and just flat out sounding RAW and stuff like that but, The CC in my mind can do it all, Leads, rythms, solos, ETC. The Invader is great but it is a one trick pony in my mind. The CC is very versatile, I havent really found anything that is hasnt done really well.

Really?
The CC does sound very good in all the clips I've heard from both Dr. Barlo and Stevo.
I like to shred some fast runs once in a while, I'm not shure if the CC does the shred thing as well as the high gain fast palm muted chunky hardcore riffing.

My favorite album (Thrice: The Illusion of Safety) was recorded using mostly LP's with super distortions in it. I love the tones on that album so I'm giving the Dimarzio a go.

But if the CC can do all that and more...

Well, The super D is a wonderful pickup. If that sound is what you are looking for, give it a try. If it dosent jive with you try the CC

Yup, sounds like a plan.
I just saw another thread where people claim the CC isn't very agressive or tight?

hey Stevo, these are great tones- can you tell me ,

on the Marshall, on a scale of available gain, where were you on the amp setting? Also, Is it a stock JCM?
thanks
Thanks Alan - I got your PM.

Re: Custom-custom, is this pup able to get mean?

Thanks for listening you guys. I think the CC is a great pickup for hard rock and metal. If I were more of a metal player, I would definitely use it more.

I have played all of the Customs and I think the regular Custom has the best palm mute sound.. the CC would be 2nd. I like the upper end notes (when soloing) on the CC a little more though. It has lots of personality up there.. very metaly :D

Re: Custom-custom, is this pup able to get mean?

thanks Stevo-
Hey SD HQ is right in your backyard? Do they have any kind of walk-in testing you can do? I'd drive 60-90 min. for that chance !
thanks

You want a beefy round bass, thick and rich mids, smooth, rounded off highs and balls!? Rio Grande BBQ.

I was gonna get one but i heard it has those upper mids of the JB which i hate
the JB is a great pup for the most part but i do not like that upper middy tone it has? it has a nice output, great harmonics and sings real good but those darn upper mids ruin it for me :smack:

Then you gotta stay away from BBQ.

thanks and i will! :laugh2: it is a shame because the JB is a nice pup but a little to focused towards those upper mids.
so if the BBq follows that route forget it! :laugh2:

Re: Custom-custom, is this pup able to get mean?

Man, I know the feeling. This is exactly what I feel towards JB/c5 as well. BBQ was worse actually, even tho its cleaner tone helped a bit. I cannot take more than a5-PAF uppermids. The second I step into higher output territory my favorites are a2 or a3's. A5's with thinner than #42 wire produce somewhat them nasty uppermids. Helps to cut through yeah, but becomes too upfront for my tastes. Any higher output a5 magnet I owned had that problem including some of the Dimarzio's like MegaDrive.

dr B, is there ANY pup(whom ever maker) that has some good power(around the JB's power or touch less) but not that upper middy tone? i like a crisp top, focused ,fat bass and just enough mids to keep it full sounding? but NO upper middy honk :laugh2:

Not that I am aware of. In fact that's exactly the reason why I did not keep any of my high output buckers I used for more than 7 years including gibson 500T, X2N, MegaDrive, Steve's special, Custom, Super Distortion ... I am forgetting some. :smack:

BTW you could try the JB with other magnets tho, like an alnico 3 or 4. Might do what you want!

never did a magnet swap but wanted to learn just in case :)
I will definitely do it on a junker pup first

Don't worry it ain't that difficult. Just be patient, and don't use too much force when taking the pickup apart. JB is potted so the usual "pulling/sliding" trick without opening up the baseplate would not work.

Super3 is more mid-mids for lack of a better term but the ceramic mag gives it a crisp sound IMO....not as crisp as the JB but a little smoother as well.

Also, the PAF Pro is a very balanced pickup...there's not realy frequency that stands out a ton in that pickup....it's got just enough of everything IMO.
