hey wicked all these custom names confuse me,the c-5 you turned to c-8 is the sh-14 or the original ceramic c-5?

it is as follows

sh-5 or TB-5= ceramic magnet custom
sh-11 or TB-11= alnico II magnet custom
sh-14 or TB-14= alnico 5 magnet custom
all these are the SAME exact wind with different magnets that all
you can put a alnico 8 in ANY of them and get the SAME EXACT RESULTS
the tremspaced customs(TB series) have a slightly hotter wind( a little higher Resistance) because they use a larger coil size to compensate the wider spacing of a fender or floyd rose trem bridge
later gibsons also have a wider spacing now and a tremspaced pup lines up PERFECT on these
my wine red Lester has a tremspaced duncan and it lines up exact.

The CC in my poplar Fly is a li'l bright for my taste, but I'm growing accustomed to it. Besides, as stated previously, I can add bass in at the amp. I do like the tone of it, however.

If the CC sounds too bright, that must be one seriously over-bright guitar. Maybe only an Invader can warm it up!

Let's not forget that the pups are going into a Les Paul. Assuming mahogany and relatively similar body shape (if it's a copy) with a set mahogany neck, the natural proporties of the wood are going to produce a very fat sound with a low-mid spike. Dropping even the APH2 should produce a balsy sound. When I think of fat, ballsy, and rude tones, I typically think of a lower output pickup through a cranked tube amplifer.

Don't get me wrong, I love the CC (granted, mine's in a very bright guitar), but sometimes I think the hotter pickups can be so edgy that they take a bit of the rude ballsiness out of the tone (which is exactly why I am close to pulling the JB out of my LP Studio and going with something with a tad less output).

Good points, Mike. An APH2 would be very balsy. Slash is evidence of that. Even with a 14.4k DC resistance, I never really put the CC in the "high output" category. The way it reacts is more of a medium or medium-hot. It's like that kind of salsa that's got just the right amount of zing without making your eyes water and chugging too many beers.

I think Dave (theodie) has corrupted my mind about the JB. As much as I like it, I think I want to try something else in my homemade. I'd prefer another CC but I'm also thinking about the Screamin' Demon too since I'm going to convert it from H-H to H-S. Problem is, the SSL-6 I have is hotter than a Demon.

The Rio would be a really nice medium output pickup. Mine measured around 12k. I thought it was a bit thick in my LP, but mine was the Double Cut. I wouldn't mind trying one in my LP Standard. I think I'd give the CC a shot first though. It's a good rockin pickup though and I'd get one again with no reservations.
