Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

The PG is bright for a A2 pickup, the CC is very warm. The PG has high mids or something going on with it, the CC has alot of low mids. They are both sort of loose but, the PG is more loose IMO.

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

CC is more like a A2Pro with the tone control rolled off. It lacks that assymetrical zing PG has.

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

The only things the PGb and the CC have in common is that they both are 'buckers, both use alnico II mags, and they're both mde by Duncan. Everything else is different. The CC is hotter, smoother, warmer, and more compressed than the PGb. They both cut through well, but if (as a lead player) you're going up against a lot of vocals, multiple guitars, and keys or a horn section, I'd recommend the PG.

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

Kinda Hijacking Newb Question:

How's the PG handle high amounts of gain? Like hardrock borderline metal gain? Thanks

I actually bought one from Theodie but won't be able to put it in for another month or two.

In my band, I'm up against a lot of other insturnments but I still cut through. Then again, I have it in a strat with a super reverb that we'll be bright no matter what, that's plugged into a tube screamer. Anyway, I have the best tone that I've ever heard from this setup, and I recomend it to everyone...The 59n with a CC bridge is amazing in a strat.

Touché.

I was approaching this from a LP into a Marshall point of view.

I've owned both, and this is a good description!

It will work well if you like a loose bottom end.

There's something else besides that?

I'm with Benjy - way moore differences than similarities.

PG - classic PAF, nice cut from hi mids, bright without being harsh, plus a bit of fizz/sizzle

CC - ultra fat, mega mid, loose bottom, crunch monster with woman tone all over the highs. Medium hot (very hot in the mids which are middle of mid)

by the way...two great tastes that taste great together - PG in neck and CC in bridge!

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

i've used a cc in my strat for a long time and it's probably the single best humbucker you can put in a strat - period. i did have a patb-1 for a while and that was a close second, but something particular about the cc just makes it over the top.

i had thought of putting a pg in another strat but it seems like it's going to be too bright for me. i don't like bright sqeely strats really. i often like to do high gain stuff like lamb of god and sepultura, so i never had good luck with pickups that sound bright. i played a pg in a les paul once a long time ago and thought it was very nice but probably too bright for a strat. i don't know a lot about it, but from what i gather that is true.

"loose" is a relative term. to me the cc isn't "loose," rather it's just right. compared to ceramics or tighter dimarzios, yeah it could be considered a little loose, but i really wouldn't charactarize that pickup as a "loose" pickup. the patb-1, IMO, is much looser. to me the cc is charactarized by great midrange grind and terrific smooth highs.

(Les Paul into dual rectifier POV) I agree, the pickup itself isn't loose but the lower frets of the bottom E string is loose, and dropped D makes the string almost inaudible. The rest of the pup sounds really sweet though. And if you swap an A5 into (which is what I did) it solves all the loose bottom problems; you lose a little bit of sweetness but it can still be attained with some knob tweaking. It's more aggressive and chunky with an A5 - don't some say the PG+ is very similar to the 59 specwise and tonewise? With my setup it sounds VERY ballsy, the mismatched coils help give a great cut and presence when playing in a group, and being the PAF that it is I'm able to avoid the classic Dual Rectifier fizzfest and bring some chunky meat out of my amp.

PG works well in the neck of my SG w/a brass nut (Shiva and Trem-o-verb w/2x12's) Not too loose but the guitar has a lot to do with that too. I prefer it over the 57 classic, Phat Cat, and APH-1 i have had in there previously

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

I hate to hijack, but can someone tell me if the PGn in a Les Paul could do credit to some jazz runs? Or Santana-style woman tone?

Inquiring minds want to know...

TIA

Bill

Re: Custom Custom vs. Pearly Gates

PGn can most certainly do santana style woman tone. Especially with the right hardware on the guitar (pots, caps, etc).

----

Just to add to this conversation, I found that the Custom (not the CC) in my Lester was too compressed. My big complaint when going from the PGn to the Custom...was going from a nice open sound in the PGn to a very compressed and focused sound in the Custom.

I wonder, given the loseness of the CC, if the CC might have been a better option for me.
