I agree, I love reading threads like these. Especially when it involves posts from guys that were on the old forums, and also guys that are extremely familiar and well versed in the history and first hand experience of not only SD products, but whatever the subject may be. I learn so much on here every time I get on. My individual goal is to contribute in my own way and add to the awesome discussions that occur here.

You talking about this one? I saw it on ebay for $12, but I'm looking for the interview you are talking about online first, to see if anyone published it on a free website.

I was thinking, since the Full Shred predates the Custom 5 by about 18 years, it is entirely possible that Vivian Campbell asked for his signature pickup to be designed around either the Custom or CC and he was satisfied with a simple magnet and polepiece change. Since it was back before the days of the C5, no one noticed the similarity of the winds.
If this is true a then the people accusing the Full Shred of being a C5 with hex screws got it backwards.
Edit: it's also entirely possible that Vivian requested a Custom model that he could use in the middle, like on his "Lightning Storm Shredder". I know a few people here have done guitars with only middle and bridge humbuckers.

Yup that is issue I am talking about. I can't forget that issue. As that particular interview and Vivan's Blaze got me interested in Duncans. And for years I wanted a guitar like that. If I am not wrong I think that Blaze went on to become the Nightswan.

I believe it was around 78 that the Custom was invented. The Custom Custom was early 80's (I forget when) and the Custom 5 didn't show up until some time in the early 2000's.

The original SH-5 Custom's official release was 1979. By 1981, they were already onto the SH-"8" (Invader)!

Exactly. Kind of difficult for the Custom to released in the 80s when a circa 1979 Guitar Player magazine has an ad for it.

I came to the forum around 1999/2000, and was one of the members most interested in creating different versions of the Custom. I was urging Duncan to make the C5 a production pickup. I had installed every magnet and even made a 15.3k C5, which is a bit pushed and compressed. 14.4k is the best number for that wind. Gibson knows it too, because that's what the 498T is.
MY favorite is the unoriented roughcast Custom 5 and the C/59 hybrid. I actually own one of the first two BachtoRock made from a Custom and 59B.
I vaguely remember VH experimenting with the CC or hot A2's because of the scooped nature of Soldanos and 5150's. It beefed up the mids on 6L6 amps.
