Custom foam inserts for hard case

I have a Gator hard case for my RR5 which is basically a large rectangle with some foam inserts to hold it in place.

I just got one of the Charvel Desolation Stars and since it fits in the RR5 case I'm thinking I can just make up some new foam inserts for it.

I can probably get it solid enough with the existing inserts, just by packing them tight against the Star, but it would be cool if I could make some proper sized ones up with some cheap foam or polystyrene or something.

I can't be the first one to think of this, so who's done it and what did you use?

What sort of volume do you need to fill?

I have some leftover interlocking foam blocks from a Gator keyboard case. These might be firm enough to protect the pointy extremities of your guitar.

I'll take a photo later. :beerchug: It isn't a lot though.

EDIT - crap, I can't take a pic, the guitar is in bits being painted. I'll take a photo next week when I get it all back together!

Re: Custom foam inserts for hard case

We have stores that specialise in many types of foam rubber and associated products. I have bought entire blocks that completely fill a guitar case, and then cut out the guitar shape. The foam i try to get is the stiffer grey stuff, similar to the smaller pieces one often finds inside computer packaging.

A trick for cutting it and getting that 'factory cut' look is to use an electric breadknife. Works perfectly. You can find them at charity shops and second-hand stores for a couple of dollars. I bought mine at a garage sale for fifty cents.

I use foam all day long, get some sizes and I'll send you the foam for free if you cover the postage. I'll even cut it to shape if you send me a template. Send me a pm if you're interested.

You guys rock! Once I get the guitar built back up and can get the sizes I'll get some sizes sorted. :)

Re: Custom foam inserts for hard case

My foam inserts arrived today, thanks to the awesome Don (d1dsj), what a guy! I bought a couple of strips of velcro from ebay for about £1 and stuck some to the base and sides of the inserts (the case has velcro on it for the existing inserts that came with the RR5).

That's me set, and all thanks to the help of a kindly forum bro :beerchug:

I love how you did that. Now I know how to build the case for my Warlock. :cool2:

Re: Custom foam inserts for hard case

Styrofoam wrapped in felt. or whatever. Use a little hot glue.

man, thats so cool! Got me GASSING hard!!!

I would assume it's not so much CNC
but get some fuzzy cloth at the hobby shop
And some semi rigid foam
Then spray adhesive

Pull out the cloth on a regular square guitar case
Add / Subtract foam bits till the guitar is semi snug
the spray and stick foam in place
Then add the cloth with the same spray adhesive

Dont do the top of the guitar case
Only the part where the guitar rests at

Oh and
