custom guitar straps?

I'm always having trouble finding guitar straps of the correct length that aren't totally butt ugly.

Anyone know where I can get some custom guitar straps? Or at least something different than what all the stores carry?

Thanks!

Re: custom guitar straps?

Do what my wife did. Contact a saddle maker and see what he can do. She had one make me a custom black leather strap, thick too, about 3 inches wide, has 3 button holes for varying length (it's all one piece, no adjustor strap), and my name engraved on it and painted red. It's extremely comfortable no matter what guitar I use it with.

I also like a longer strap, and I need the body of the strap longer--due to an old back injury. Here's what I found.

Franklin. These are terrific leather straps--Guitar Center carries them--great value. My favorite.

Double Treble. I have one that works for a 335, but the standard strap would be too short. I understand he can do custom work.

Moody. (Unbelievable leather quality, but very expensive. You'll have to call and go custom order here.) I have a long, wide one--very comfortable.

Italia Leather Straps. Check out their website, and they sell on E-bay. Then call him--he can do custom lengths, and very reasonably. I bought one from E-bay, next time I will go custom made.

Long Hollow. I think these folks make the Franklin Straps for Greg Bennett.

Eyeland. Beautifully made straps, with some really strange designs. Different adjustment procedure.

El Dorado. Specializes in Western-tooled designs. Spendy.

Sully's. Classic 1950's thin strap with pad and buckle.

That's all I know, but there are many others.

Two things about the Italia
  1. They're no longer selling on eBay
  2. They're pretty thick. I got one of the last ones sold on eBay a few weeks ago and am not looking forward to putting straplocks on it.
Frankly, for what they're asking these days, I'd be inclined to look elsewhere. I find mine to be nice but not particularly nicer than my leather Levy strap that goes for about 1/2 what the Italias go fore these days.

My wife got one for me last Christmas. I love it. It's one of the few all-leather straps that doesn't use the old-fashioned two piece loop adjustment. I like to tweak my strap length for different situations (sitting, standing, recording) and having straplocks makes it a special pain in the butt to adjust most leather straps.

I plan to get another one but will likely leave it to my wife for another Christmas present. :)
