Custom/Jazz com for B standard

Hi there..

I just got a Damien Elite 6 FR a couple of weeks ago. It comes with EMGs but I'm going to replace them. I already have a Custom/Jazz combo waiting to go here. I was thinking about tuning this guitar to B standard to play some Death Metal stuff like Carcass... I have another guitar, tuned to D standard, with a Custom/SHR-1 combo and I love it, but I'm not sure if the Custom/Jazz combo would work nicely for B standard.

Would like to know your opinion about that.. thx

Re: Custom/Jazz com for B standard

Custom is already too thumpy for me in drop C. Some people might dig it though.

I don't know, my buddy replaced the Invaders in his Sinister Gates signature model with a Custom/Jazz set & he only tunes to B standard. It wouldn't be my first choice for the guitar but he makes it work? I play the guitar & it sounds/feels like garbage but in his hands it's a great sounding guitar! Like anything else it's all a matter of perspective. That being said, get a Pegasus! It's everything you want for B standard & they really retain their clarity even under tremendous amounts of gain, just beautiful!!!

Re: Custom/Jazz com for B standard

Did not like the Custom7 tuned to B standard, but I do like the JB7. I do find the 6-string Custom to be dark in mahogany even with a 1/8" maple top and Floyd in standard E, but do like the Custom5 for C# on the same guitar, but mostly for vintage Sabbath.

The C5 is also nice for D standard on the same guitar, again for vintage Sabbath. But then I don't play anything that came along after Countdown To Extinction, so I can't say if it'll be good for Arch Enemy or whatever the kids call Metal these days

If it's Floyded, you might look into the PATB-1 bridge. That should keep the low E(B) from getting too flabby but not push it into the distortion-class pickup. For that you'd want the PATB-2, which utterly kills in D standard.

Re: Custom/Jazz com for B standard

Thanks for the advices! I think I will tune this Scheter guitar with Custom/Jazz set to D standard, which is my main tuning. Also have a Jackson loaded with EMGs that I might tune to B standard. Cheers!

Another option:

I have a Nazgul in a third guitar that used to be loaded with a Custom. I could take this Nazgul for the Schecter and replace with the Custom as before. Then, I was thinking about getting a Sentient for the neck position with the Nazgul in the bridge.

This would work fine for B standard, right?!

Most definitely. IMO opinion there is none better for low tunings. My 7 string nazgul handles B standard tuning no problem. It handles A standard and drop G no problem too. I've taken my 6 string with Black winters down to Drop B with no problem.

Re: Custom/Jazz com for B standard

Normally, I'd recommend a Pegasus/Sentient pair, but if you already have the Jazz/Custom set, I have heard of many people really liking that for low tunings. If you have them already, it is worth some time to try. Lower the Custom's bass side if it gets too thumpy (many people like the thump, though). Remember, for any active-to-passive pickup swap, you will have to change a few things, like the pots.

^^^ definitely try them if you have them. If I had to choose from Classic Duncan models (ie: not the newer models designed for heavier styles), The custom family would be at the top of my list for drop tunings. Especially the Custom SH-5 & Full Shred - As a matter of fact I'm itching to try the 7 string Full shred set!!!

Re: Custom/Jazz com for B standard

I run dropped C/straight D with the Custom & Pearly Gates in my Les Paul, if that helps. And I don't see why dropped B wouldn't work either, it's only a half step. The key, IMHO, when tuning down is to go up in string size the lower you tune. That way you maintain your string tension, which helps with clarity and helps to keep intonation within range of your bridge.

Back when I used to tune to dropped B, I ran JBs, a Screamin' Demon, Dimebuckers, and a Black Winter set, and I didn't have any problems.

Cool man!!

I'm going to use 0.13 string gauge for B standard

Re: Custom/Jazz com for B standard

I play in open B and had no problem with the Custom. Black Winter is also fine. I'll have a Nazgul installed eventually.
