custom or JB

i just scored a swamp ash bodied super strat with a maple neck and fret board and a floyd rose it has a HUM in the neck and a HUM in the bridge i was thinkin PGneck or 59neck and a CUSTOM or JB in the bridge . i need crunch/harmonics/sustain for hard rock old school style like scorpions/queensryche/dokken/whitesnake thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey shred-dog. I would go with the Custom. Both are good choices, but I think the Custom has more crunch to it then the JB. Plus it is more balanced than the JB, which lacks mids. As for the neck, I don't have any experience with either, but I want to get a PGn for my Epi SG. I've heard the 59n is too bassy.

I hope you definitely post some reviews about either that you choose to put into your Strat. I have one routed for H-S-H, and have pondered the thought of going to a hummer in the bridge, but wondered if I'd be compromisng the Strat sound too much if I did. Logically, I probably would at least playing the bridge pup by itself. I have no clue what it'd sound like mixed with a single coil in the #2 switch position.
I have an Epi G400 with a Custom in the bridge and a '59 in the neck....the Custom sounds bitchin' for anything from AC/DC to EVH stuff with great crunch and a nice bite, but I also have found to consider the '59 too bassy at least for that particular guitar and an Epi LP Standard I also had it in at one time. I ended up just using the Custom all the time in those guitars. I'm putting a Gibson PAF in the bridge and a different '59 in the neck of the Epi LP to see if the newer '59 sounds any brighter than the old one. I may even try a Full Shred if that doesn't work.
The PGn does sound good in an Epi "G", and I think I may end up putting it back into my G400 after using it in my Epi LP for awhile. Those PG's are hard to tame sometimes....they like some guitars better than others. I may eventually try a PGb in a Strat I have just to see how that sounds.
Could be fun.

Lacks mids? The JB has a midrange PEAK an is MUCH more midrange-y than the Custom.

"Crunch" is in the ear of the beholder. Much of the sound of 80's metal is a JB into a JCM-800 Marshall. PLENTY of crunch.

The Custom is hotter and flatter in the mids than the JB. A bit more bass and high end. Also, not as smooth, no doubt due to the ceramic magnet. They are very different sounding pickups. The JB is a bit more vocal, warmer and clearer.

The '59 neck has more bass & treble but less mids than the Pearly Gates neck. But not by much. They are very similar. The '59 is slightly more "scooped" sounding. The Pearly is a drop more vocal.

Both pups have plenty of mids, it's just that the Custom has more Low-Mids than the JB, & the JB has more High-Mids than the Custom. ..Both pups sound a little 'scooped' from the mids that they're lacking(Custom having more scooped High-Mids than the JB, & the JB having scooped Low-Mids than the Custom). ..I have no experience with any 'swamp ash bodied super strat with a maple neck and fret board and a floyd rose' guitars, so I won't tell you what to get. ..Just letting you know they'll both have mids. ...Another pup with Mids, the CC will give you a more Middle-Mids with less High-Highs & Low-Lows, thus will lack clarity in the wrong guitar.
