custom pickguards HSS strat

I'm looking to replace my neck pickup with a humbucker. I can't find any pickguards that are H-S-S meaning neck humbucker, single middle, single bridge.

I use the stratty bridge tone alot to get a nice palm muted grind with my TS9/Analogman comprossor combo so i decided to change my neck tone to something more noiseless/fatter/wide range.

where can i find a pickguard that is HSS? And how would i go about 'routing' my pickguard out to fit a humbucker? My guitar is an american deluxe so it is already routed for humbuckers but is currently fitted with an SSS config. BTW my antiquity II surfer neck pickup is up for grabs.

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

go to warmoth.com, you can get whatever pickup layout you like from their pickguards. Either that or get a single coil sized humbucker.

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

aight im gonna check warmoth out to see if i can get this right, thanks.

I'm looking to get something that sounds very clean/articulate/jazzy, very low output like my single coils. I've been eyeballing a seth lover, but i'll see what i decide on once i sell that surfer.

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

I did a setup like that for one of my customers.

It looks really goofy.

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

Be aware that most folks, although not always, refer to the pickup order starting at the bridge. So traditionally HSS means bridge humbucker and 2 singles. If you custom order something you'd probably need to tell them SSH.

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

how bad can it possibly LOOK? hahah

It's just that i really have no desire for a bridge humbucker. So if i were to put a seth lover in the bridge or something, it probably wont see half as much mileage vs the same pickup in the neck position.

So perhaps it may look goofy. Thanks for the honesty though! I didnt really consider how awful it would look. Maybe i should sell my RW/RP surfer middle pickup as well and get a black SH pickguard, nickel covered seth lover in the neck, and pocket the money for gas and drinks :friday:. I'm going for a tone that is capable of covering larry carlton/robben ford/elliott randall/maybe some skunk baxter from steely dan/doobie brothers. I play alot of steely dan BTW, and that fat sustaining neck PAF sound in an articulate very playable strat is something that im looking for.

So should i abandon the single coils altogether? Sell all my duncan surfers and double fat my strat with low output humbuckers and pocket the difference?

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

Humbuckers are like training wheels. Anyone can play 'em. Getting worthwhile sounds from single coils puts you one step closer to achieving total enlightenment.

(Insert harp sounds and chorus of angels here)

I certainly didn't mean it as a dig. It sounded alright, it just hits the eye wrong. To me anyway.

Why not a Phat Cat in the bridge then? At least it won't look like a turd.

Re: custom pickguards HSS strat

If anyone's interested, I've got....

Fender Custom Shop light blue moto HSS. $25 shipped.
Fender Custom Shop clear aluminum engine turned HSS. $35 shipped.

Both have 1 bolt hole on each side of the humbucker.

PM me, if interested. Will consider straight trades for Duncan pickups of any kind.
