Picked up a SH 5 yesterday should be here Monday.Gonna use it stock for awhile see how it does in a LP copy. But pretty sure I'll eventually go to an A5 mag. Anyone tried it? Cool the treble down a bit?

Re: Custom/sh5///mag swap

Yeah the C5 is a standard production model. A quick search will provide you with days worth of material to sift through. As for cooling the treble down... kinda. It loses the crushed glass highs of the ceramic but it drops out the mids vs the ceramic so in many ways a C5 seems brighter than a SH5

Re: Custom/sh5///mag swap

Try a UOA5 in it. It will cut the highs just a bit like the A5 vs. Ceramic, but it will give more mids.

I agree.
Once you do this swap; you get a very musical pickup with lots of expressive, vintage vibe to it.
To me it drops the output as well in comparison to the Ceramic of A5 versions.

Re: Custom/sh5///mag swap

The Custom is a fav of les Paul users. It's louder, punchy, and more powerful than the Custom 5. If you have a lot of Mids in your amp, the Custom 5 will even it out. They both rock.

Depends on what kind of music you play. I play classic rock and blues with LP's & stock SH-5's don't work for me. I've had all of the production Customs, which now have either UOA5's or A8's in them. Both of those mags tame the treble, and a Custom 8 (SH-5 with an A8) also has plenty of punch and output.

The clip's I've found though few ,tell me it can do CR or blues well. One in a AM95 bridge sounded real good. I like the JB also had it in a LP copy awhile back and it was pretty good.Put it in a MIM Strat now and it's great there. Hoping the Custom will give up some of that same vibe. Got a UOa5 hangin around so may try that 1st

Re: Custom/sh5///mag swap

Got it,put it in tonight.Like it! Pretty good as is.But will go with UOA5 pretty soon. Alinico ii pro in neck makes a nice match.

Re: Custom/sh5///mag swap

uoA5 is a fantastic choice. I have a uoA5 custom in my prs se singlecut, and love it there. it's paired up with a dimarzio 36th anniversary in the neck position, and they make a great combo. I imagine it would sound great with a number of the Duncan PAF-style neck models, as well...

+1. To me, it's the Custom variant that by far sounds the most like a 'PAF on steroids.'
