Custom (SH5/TB5) with more bass, less highs

Re: Custom (SH5/TB5) with more bass, less highs

stick an alnico 8 mag in the custom(making it a custom8), rounder(but still biting) highs with strong, well defined yet warm lows.

Re: Custom (SH5/TB5) with more bass, less highs

A lot of times a pickup that someone says is "scooped" isn't really scooped - it just has more bass and more treble than whatever pickup the commentator is comparing it to.

A lot of times a pickup that someone says doesn't have enough treble just has more mids than whatever pickup the commentator is comparing it to.

So lose some treble and your pickup will sound like it has more bass and mids, and you can do that by switching a 500K volume and tone pot to 250K.

Works wonders with the JB.

Or, just roll the tone knob down. I know that sounds crazy, but that knob is actually for reducing treble response! I hear jazz guys do it all the time for just the effect you are talking about!

And I totally agree Lew - The CC is the same way. It has lows and highs just like a PAF almost IMO. It just has so much mid that relatively speaking it sounds like there are no lows/highs.

(ps - I think I'm one of those guys that hears those pups as scooped. All apologies if I'm one of the self-appointed! Probably just my mid deficient/damaged ears!!!!)

That could work but I have no tone knob, just a 250k volume

LOL
It may sound scooped for you and different to others, maybe it's me that hears something that isn't there :eyecrazy:

Meanwhile a friend of mine told me the Super Distortion could be an option
Never tried one...

I'll be buying one new pup, if I had a custom laying around I might look for some magnet change.
If I don't get anywhere I might just go for you advice and buy one C and one A8 magnet.

The Stock Duncan answer to the Custom8 is the Alternative 8. Check it.
