im am very sorry if this has already been asked but, how would i go about getting a custom shop pickup (build your own, hybrid) that could be distributed to south wales (which doesn't involve it getting sent to a friend in america and then have that friend send it to me)
because i don't know how to go about this. thanks :)

Re: custom shop distribution

You should be able to order it through your local SD dealer.

Why would he order it through his local dealer when its being shipped to a friend in America? Easier to just have the friend order it direct from the custom shop or if he has to have the friend go though the local dealer for his friend. But no idea why you would do that, might as well go direct or use one of the online dealers that are used to ordering from the custom shop.

He did say "which doesn't involve it getting sent to a friend in america and then have that friend send it to me".

Re: custom shop distribution

Sorry I read it wrong.

The bad news is the UK distributor is a known PITA to work with and has even before refused to order CS stuff for people usually making up a story that it's not available then trying to sell them something he has in stock.

Ask me how I know. In this case it's worth it to try and circumvent the local guy even if you use a dealer on eBay like banjomikez who will ship internationally

Re: custom shop distribution

A lot of dealers are that way because the customer either doesn't have the money when it comes in or they try to cheat the dealer on the price when it comes time to pay up. Comments like "I can get it cheaper online", etc etc.

It's a business and has to make money, and that means they have to make as much money as possible on each sale to cover the losses, because it's always losses.

Dude that is a lame defense of what they do, Maybe in the US they let you pay later but here you pay upfront for special orders.

I can handle what the Italy dealer does its frustrating but respectable, you call him he says "I have these in stock, i will order these and thats it." That i can handle

There is no bait and switch that I got from the UK dealer, "sure we can order it will be 4 weeks" Pay upfront... wait 6 weeks. get told its coming its coming. After 3 months of being strung along start asking for answers and after push comes to shove be told "well we didnt order it, its a pain we dont want to and we normally only order ever 4 months, but we got this in stock and its similiar to what you want"

Sorry but that isnt trying to cover losses.

If the OP wants hes welcome to try to his local dealer. But there is a reason why people try to avoid the local dealers.

Re: custom shop distribution

Well, yeah, there's also that scenario you describe. It's dirty dealing on the dealer's part. Then again, that's also one of the issues with international trade - it's still prohibitively expensive to ship small quantities from America to almost anywhere, especially with certain items like guitar parts. The fault there lies equally with the shipping companies and the overall lack of serious competition and with local governments who demand a cut as it crosses their border.

The logical alternative is to have a local shop that is owned and operated by the main brand and services the global region it's located in.

Unfortunately, it's also the solution that is the least-likely to happen, for as many varied reasons as there are companies to do it. The biggest hurdle is quality-of-branding assurance. Another one specific to SD would be when someone in Europe wants a custom pickup wound by MJ or whoever she passes her crown to when that time comes.
