Hey all,
With all discussion about the custom shop a few months back, I thought I'd mention how the process played out for me when placing an order myself
As I'm in London, and knew I'd not be able to go via the CS website to place the order, I mentioned my intention to try to place one to Mincer, so he could follow everything if need be as it progressed. I did try to use the CS site to save an order profile, but it repeatedly saved an empty form, so I just typed something out in MS Word that answered the same questions, and saved it as a PDF. After a quick check with Mincer on whether I'd covered enough detail, I printed that out, and took it to Macaris in Tin Pan Alley (where a certain pickup winder used to kick about no less...can't think who...), who then passed it on to Rosetti (UK distributor), who in turn ask the CS if it's doable, and come back to the dealer with a price for me.
I put that detail together at the beginning of December, and was informed of a price on January 12th, along with the notional 12 week wait if I placed the order, which I did the following day.
Macaris (dealer) informed me that they had received the order on the February 23rd, and according to the detail on the box lid, the pup had been made on January 26th.
In the end, I received it 8 weeks earlier than anticipated, and with NAMM thrown into the mix too! Admittedly, having to pass info along to dealer, then distributor, to CS etc, played a part in slowing things down, once the order had been placed, things moved a lot quicker than expected
So, from the UK, it appears to go like this:
You lay out the order detail --> dealer --> passes detail on to distributor (Rosetti) --> CS advises distributor --> distributor passes CS detail back to dealer --> dealer lets you know how much, when etc.
After that fannying about is done, things seem to move quickly, though whether it's the case that shipping may take place depending on a certain size the UK distributor plans to order, I've no idea. Maybe at a different time of the year, I may well have ended up waiting the full 12 weeks.
I should also mention that my order was for a standard 6 string humbucker, in a gold cover, so there was no unusual aspects to the order.
Anyhoo, just thought I'd post something on my experience, in case it might be of use to others outside the US, and thanks again to Mincer for his shadow ninja skills as it went along
