custom shop p rails?

Hey. I want to buy at least 2 maybe 4 p rails with the pearloid covers like on the guitar in the demo video on youtube. The guy in the demo said they were available from the custom shop, but I emailed SD and did not get a reply? Is there a phone number I can call or can I order through a dealer/luthier?

Re: custom shop p rails?

IIRC, that was something that Frank did himself. You can try calling the custom shop directly and ask them.

OK. . .I am bummed. Found the phone number and spoke to custom shop, and they said they are not available with pearloid covers. That sucks;-( A tele with double binding in pearloid NEEDS pearloid covers on the p rails!

Re: custom shop p rails?

contact frank falbo and ask him about them. i think he said something along the lines of them costing 1,000,000 because he's got the only set in existence:lmao:

Re: custom shop p rails?

they're quite sought-after, these elusive pearloid p-rails...

i believe you'd be looking for the guy in the red suit
read the fine print
:deal:

(i don't think you can get 'em bud, sorry)

i know this is the SD forum and all, but that's kinda bogus that the custom shop can't build these custom p-rails for ya.

just sayin'....:wall:

Re: custom shop p rails?

I am also interested in the pearloid p-rails from the demo. If I can figure out how to disassemble the p-rails I'll take a crack at it myself. I suspect it trickier than it looks but I'm game.

There's a pick-guard website called terapin (or terrapin) guitars that makes stick-on wood-tone tops for pick-ups. They also work with all the common pickguard materials. So if I can't figure out how to mod the p-rail myself I plan on contacting terapin & see if they'll make a stick-on pearloid for the p-rail. There has to be a way to get there from here.

If you find a solution to the elusive pearloid p-rails keep us informed.

I'd gladly pay extra for them but frank seems to be adding a bunch of zeros on that price. Heck I could even live with white of they made triple shots in pearloid. Nah I really need the pearloid p rails. A purple flame top tele that is double bound in pearloid NEEDS to have pearloid p rails.

There seems to be enough interest/demand for them. Maybe if we had enough people ready to order they would do a special run? I am down for ordering 3-4 sets.

I am also going to investigate custom making them. Or more accurately paying someone else to do it!

I agree. The woman answering the phone sounded pissed that I asked. She was either having a bad day, is always like that or is tired of phone calls asking for pearloid p rails.

I would assume that it's the latter. I'm sure they're really regretting that video by now.

Anyway, making pearloid covers for P-rails sounds difficult but definitely possible to do yourself. It'd be a fun project....:scratchch

Re: custom shop p rails?

IDK, trying to disassemble the p rails might kill the p'up. The "top" layer of the bobbin is too close to the coil wire. If you cut of them in the process you're screwed. Try asking a luthier if he/she would be willing to try this for you. If they manage to get the top layer off, you should be able to make a template out of bobbin and cut it out of a pearloid sheet.

+1 I'm sure if slash or some famous artist artist asked for a pearloid p rail, they would be done in a heartbeat. Who knows though, it might not be cost effective or something (just being fair to SD). : private:

Re: custom shop p rails?

Derek's been entering parameters into one of our CNC engravers and maybe within the next couple weeks we can try some. Its true I did make those covers myself, with the help of a machinist who has since passed away. He cut the blade slot and recess on the mill. Our current machinist is more than capable, it's just a matter of time. It's one of those things that really can't ever be cost effective, because there's so much hand work.

Purple flame top with pearloid binding? Yes that TOTALLY needs pearloid P-Rails. I sympathize with you. We'll try to make it happen soon. Derek will be out of the country for a couple weeks, after that he can finish the programming. There will still be a lot of hand work after the machine does the cuts. I did all the beveling with a file.

Thanks frank! I understand it is not cost effective and am willing to pay for it.

I plan on doing a purple flame top LP but probably with single pearloid binding and maybe an explorer. . . .. .they will all need pearloid p rails!

Re: custom shop p rails?

Not wanting to bother Frank with a PM. Is there any word either way on pearloid p rails? I am getting ready to start another build and need pearloid prails. At least 2 or 3 sets of em.

I was thinking about just buying white or cream and swapping later but since I also need triple shots it gets more complicated. Fingers are crossed. . . .credit card halfway out of wallet. . . . . .

Re: custom shop p rails?

Watch the 2nd video in this thread and see how the P-rail is assembled (6:00-6:30-ish). https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=191261&highlight=factory+tour

IF you can remove the cover without killing the p rail you'll be one step closer to getting a pearloid p rail.

*edit*

I just noticed that I'm repeating myself. :laugh2: If you can find a super cheap p rail on ebay, I'd try that first. No doubt, this p rail will cost as much as a "phat staple".
