Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

Trying to decide on a P90 for a tele/la cabronita I'm building. (for nasty, dirty, hard rock slide)

2" thick Poplar body
1 piece birdseye maple neck
1 pup/1 volume
P90 nasty rock machine

I was set on getting a Bare Knuckle Supermassive or 'Pig 90, but $114 plus shipping seems a bit unreasonable.

Are the SP90-2 and SP90-3 the same winds only with different magnets? Are they 43 or 44 gauge wire?

Also, what's the ballpark cost of a custom shop, true P90? If it's around the same cost as a BKP or Motor City pup, I'd rather have SD wind me something.

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

What size pickup cavity will your guitar have? That nice Mister TV Jones does a P90 in a 'Tron-sized cover. He also does 'Trons in P90 covers. The non-adjustable blade polepieces of the Super'Tron would lend a strong hint of Firebird to the sonic palette.

It will be a normal soapbar route
Looking for a traditional P90

So, a Tele/Junior hybrid, only not in Mahogany? :scratchch

I believe the Custom and Hot P90s are 43 gauge. I haven't used a Hot but I have a Godin with a pair of Customs and they are BEASTS! I really like the bridge sound that those dual big ceramics kick out.

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

Why not just use an SP90-2 or SP-90-3?

I'm leaning that way at the moment. I just wanna find out if they are indeed the same wind with different magnets; if that's the case, I'd go with the SP90-2 so i could put in alnicos and not hafta worry about spacers.

I've got sets of both, and have taken out the ceramics and put in alnicos. No problem.

I'm thinking the SP90-3 set is wound hotter, but I'm not sure about that.

Guess I'l hafta call and confirm.

In y'all's experiences, how do the SP90-2 & SP90-3 sound compared to, say, stock Gibson P90s, Lollar overwounds, Fralin overwounds, etc (other than the obvious higher output)?

I'm looking for grinding mids, bigger bass, and smoother treble.

I'm also looking at the Wolfetone Meaner & Meanest P90s..

The SP90-2 and SP90-3 are fine if you like ceramics; I don't. Just about any bridge P-90 with A5's is going to be bright and midscooped. That's easily fixed by putting in an A8 (A8/A5 pair). That'll give you more mids & smoother treble. In my bridge SAP90-2 and SP90-3 I have A8/A4 (a little warmer than A8/A5), and in the neck A5/A5.

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

In a one pickup with no tone? I'd say the darker pickup usually but seeing as how one isn't that much darker sounding than the other it's kind of up in the air. I'd say the SP90-3, it seems like it could cover hair more tonal ground. BUT if you're planning on modifying the pickup then I'd go with the SP90-2. I actually think either way you'd be happy with it.

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

I use a8/a5 in a LP Tribute 50 and its way growlier than the standard a5/a5. Really good slide sounds. Just get a sp90-1 and a a8 magnet...

Yeah, that's why I was wondering about the winds/mag difference, as I was already planning on swapping mags.
I swap mags in all my P90s (usually A8/A5 or A8/A8 bridge, A5/A3 or A3/A3 neck).

I'm fancying the idea of an A8/UOC combo :headbang:

Yeah, one volume. Gonna be the most basic rockin' raunch machine. So yeah, I'm looking for something very warm and ballsy.

I also like the idea of a tapped P90, where I could install a push-pull pot and a treble bleed mod, and be able to go balls-to-the-wall when down, and some twangy-ish classic/southern rock when up.

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

I don't mean to add fuel to the fire, but have you considered the Alnico Staple Pickup? I haven't heard Seymour's version, but I have a Gibson LP Custom '54 reissue that came stock with their version and it's a really nice fat/clear sounding pickup. If you have the cash to spend on the custom shop pickups I would highly recommend checking one out.

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

i like the staple pups in the neck but prefer p90's in the bridge

Re: Custom Shop P90 or SP90-2..........?

On my Gibson LP Goldtop, I occasionally find myself wishing that the stock bridge position P90 had a little bit more output and "nastiness". This never happens with the SD SP90-3n in the bridge position of my LP Junior Special.

Strident is the word.

I know that itch man, I've been getting into the melody makers, esquires, and gunslingers styled guitars myself.
