Re: Custom shop SH-6 Distortion? Anyone ever?
Ah, so I’m back from an adventure that ended up at the Custom Shop after all. I tried the SH-6n (Distortion neck) in the bridge and it was good and just what Orpheo suggested it would be. Maybe a little more open, and same EQ basically but had a little less bass. Output was not quite what I wanted though, and I felt like I was being picky as this would be a great option to anyone considering it. It also didn’t have quite as much “clank” as the bridge model, but man, tons of wild harmonics. I really could have just stuck with this option and been happy I think but you know how the rabbit hole is...
So a buddy loaned me a Black Winter, and I didn’t like it. It’s obviously really close to the Distortion, but has less bass which I hated, and the mids are different, to me more bland, some might say balanced. It’s certainly a more versatile pickup than the Distortion, and the cleans are a little rounder and I thought better.
So out the BW came and back in went the Distortion bridge for the time being. Whole thing is a pain because of the way the V is constructed with the controls in the pickguard and having to remove the treble side bridge post.
I called up the Shop and talked to them about what I was after and they said the Hunter is exactly as I described. They said a little bit less compressed, brighter by a smidge, slightly less output, even more harmonics and it also has a little more bass but still just as tight. SOLD!
I ordered a Hunter bridge and put in the notes that I was looking specifically for a little less output than a Distortion. I added the note because I’ve seen some Hunters that ohm out at over 17k, and that seems like the opposite of what I want.
Anyway, it arrived today, measures 15.45k ohm and has a double thick ceramic for sure. Some threads floating around suggest that it’s in fact a Dokkenbucker (or a JB+) so it’s definitely not those.
I’ll get around to changing it out soon, as I’m going to change out the Distortion neck for a 59/Custom Hybrid at the same time. Made another thread about that.
I’ll try to make some recordings and put them on YouTube comparing the Distortion and Hunter as not a lot of info exists out there about it. I’d like to include the Distortion neck in the bridge as well in the comparison as it was great but it’s really a hassle changing pickups in this guitar so it’s not gonna happen.
Thanks all for the help, hopefully I’ll be back in the near future to update.
