Custom vs Custom 5 in a LP with a 59

I have a pretty balenced sounding 09 Epi LP standard. Supposedly it's all Nato with a thin maple vanneer. Stock everything except pots, wiring and strings of course. I run my les paul with regular d'addario 10-46 gauge strings with a lowish action and a somewhat loose trussrod. I tune E standard to D Standard ussaally, never get much below that.

The neck pup will most likely be a 59'

I play Classic rock, old school metal, thrash, blues, and various forms of rock. Mostly I play BB King, Albert King, Black keys, Black Sabbath, Megadeth/Metalicca (Rhythm), and quite a bit of Green Day.

I'm looking for something tight enough that can handle a bit of gain, but still has good cleans. A bit of PAF character in there would be great, so I was looking at a custom as they are known as PAF on steroids, or its slightly more vintagey cousin the custom 5.

So the Custom 5, Custom, JB, 59/Custom hybrid, or maybe a JB.

I don't hear the Custom as being a PAF on steroids. It's a basically a hard rock/metal PU, as is the JB. I play classic rock and blues and for me, and of what you listed, the C5 is by far the best fit for me. Getting a PU that does both Metallica and BB King well is asking a lot. To me, that's a two guitar kind of thing.

There was a video on the SD page for the custom the showed it doing kinda more gainy blues in the middle position.

I'm going with a vintage output neck pickup, so I can always mix that in for more PAF in the sound. Lol

But with either custom, I can buy some magnets and try Custom, Custom 5, and maybe something like a custom 8..
My main LP is a C5b with a 59-ish neck.

How are you liking it for gainy stuff? I have heard it's very scooped and doesn't have a healthy midrange, but is very uncompressed.

BTW this will mostly likely be ran through a Jet City or Marshall amp.

One of these days I'm going to try a Custom with a UOA5 in the bridge of something. I have heard the C5 in a Les Paul copy and it sounded quite good. Especially when you put some gain after it.

I was the first one here to put an UOA5 in a Custom when Addiction FX showed up with them. One of my favorites.

The custom custom sounds a lot like a hotter A2P and that is somewhat PAF-ish. So, I get it from that angle. I do agree that you should be looking at two guitars to cover that much sonic territory, though.

I liked the JB with a UOA5 in it. I think I would like the Custom with one even better. Sadly, too many pickups, too few guitars to put them in. If I could just find an inexpensive "Hello Kitty" strat...

That's when you need to reorder your priorities. Most of my guitars were acquired to put different PU's and wirings in. Keep an eye out for good deals, especially on used guitars. You'll always be able to find interesting PU's to put in it.

Well if i end up with a Custom UOA5 I'll let you know how it sounds compares to the stock pup.
custom5 or customcustom. the other customs are too hot
Here they say the custom does bluesy rock well. I don't play a whole lot of straight blues and really not much in the bridge position anyways. [emoji14]

Well a bit of gain is always nice for most pickups, haha

The Custom 5, 8, and UOA5 all work for classic rock & blues.

To me, the PAF qualities in the Custom wind are best highlighted by warm PU's with a lot of vintage texture: UOA5 and A2, which are also lower output. They have a looser feel, more sag. A 14K PU with a ceramic magnet is too in-your-face for a big PAF fan.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5 in a LP with a 59

To my ears, the Custom is a lot more than a PAF on steriods. I'd go with a 59/Custom Hybrid, if the guitar sounds balanced. I don't think I would mess with a C5 or CC, as the EQ for those is certainly not balanced.

I would agree with that. The CC was just too hot for me in my Les Paul, I tend to like lower output pickups.

There's something special about PAF winds. They've been used for so many kinds of music.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5 in a LP with a 59

Les Pauls tend to have really fat bass and strong clear treble naturally because of their wood/construction. They don't emphasize mids. Putting in pickups like the Custom5 and 59n which also emphasize the bass and treble while lacking mids is too much of a good thing. A Les paul needs pickups that don't get boomy in the bass and have a good helping of mids to fill out what the LP lacks. A2 pickups and some A5 pickups like the Whole Lottas, which have more mids, work better in Les Pauls. An SG, which has more natural mids is where you want to put the Custom5 and 59n.

Not to get off the subject but which in here rather have the Custom 5 or 8 ?

Well said.

Depends what kind of tones you want and what kind of guitar you have. I go for warm bridge PU's with a lot of mids, so I'm a fan of A8's and UOA5's. I want a full, hard-hitting bridge.

For some guys, less mids and more treble is what they want, so a C5 suits them better.
