Which one should I get because I have grown to like Alnico V. What is the output difference, tone, etc.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

I loved the custom, but I love the custom custom even more. It is a warmer pu. It's like porn. I can't explain it, but I'll know it when I see it. In this case, I can't explain it. I'll know it when I hear it. The thing about it is that our tastes are always changing, so at some time in the future, I may decide that the custom 5 may be the bees knees. But for now, the custom custom has grabbed my attention. But I do have a 59/c hybrid on the way.

I had a CC in one of my strats but it was too dark and too smooth..The fix in that one,was the Hybrid A2 59/Custom..The 59 brought a bit of that lost chime back in the highs..

That's the tricky thing about A2's, with me anyways. They can be too smooth, too rounded on top, not enough bite and cut. It takes certain types of windings to make them work. Seth's are an example of an excellent A2 wind.

Listen i like A5 myself but not the C5,it just sounds flat(boring no zest) and hollow(too much treble/bass not enough mids),try the C5 with a mag swap to UOA5 thats a good version of a C5:)

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

Noob question here, is there a thread that explains how to do a magnet swaps.

do an advanced search for A8 or alnico 8 and filter it to the pickup lounge. it shouldn't take but few minutes to try it.

also, I also prefer the A5 mag, but didn't like the Custom 5 - lacking mids. I made a Custom 8 this weekend and like it more... not as much as most everyone else, but definitely more than the C5. depends on what you're playing with, playing through and looking for.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

C5. Depends on the guitar, for me. It took me a little time to embrace, but I love it now. In a good-sounding mahogany guitar, I find it anything but boring.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

I've tried all three and without a doubt the regular Custom.

Keep in mind I play mainly metal and hard rock with some blues, classic rock, country rock, blues rock, etc. thrown in. It just does it all for me in my main guitar which is a Hamer Monaco Elite. I can go from brutal modern metal to classic rock to blues and it has decent enough cleans for what I do, especially with my neck pup. (granted I have a good amp to do this with so that helps a ton) With that guitar and that pup I can just plug in and play for hours. The CC, C5, even C8 just lack that..something and I don't know what it is. The closest I've come for a long period of time is the JB, but over time that pick up wore on me. I have the Custom in my main axe for regular tuning and my axe (and Epi LP) for downtuned stuff and it handles both equally well. Seymour really hit the nail on the head with this one.

if you like A5 you will love the C5. what guitar is it going in?

The great thing is, they are all the same pickup with the only difference being the magnets. get the C5 and if you don't like it, with a few cheap magnets you can turn it into a Custom, CC or a C4 or C8 or whatever with ease.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

It is all about personal taste.

I played the custom as my main bridge pup for many years. These days I hate it. Muddy low mids and lots of compressed high end with little dynamics. Really boring, unless ypu are just banging away power chords all day long through a Marshall type amp.But if you want raw crunch without the buzzsaw of the distortion, go for it. Personally i think the dimarzio super D is a much better pup for that crunchy ceramic thing.

C5 i have not had a problem with as far as mids go in 3 very different guitars. In a sub par piece of wood I could see it being a problem or with a amp that is not all that mid focused. But if you,ve got a nice fulll sounding axe, go for it. The HIGHS however can be super harsh in some guitars. My PRS Sc250 had some serious larity in the top end and the C5 was like an icepick to the ear. The bass is "hard"like the 59.

CC has muddy lows, and does not clean up well at all. But it has a nice singing fat lead tone, and thick mids without getting brittle like the other customs.

Something between the C5 and the CC would probably be the ideal, IMO.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

We ought to have a poll of all the popular Custom versions: C, CC, C5, C8, UO C5, & C4 and see how that goes.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

Don't let that turn you off. Some guys lower their PU's a little more than normal with them.

May be, but doesnt really matter to me personally as i am just not into that kind of output or tone anymore. rregardless of mag type. Ripped the c5/jazz out of my hamer and put my unpotted A2 PAfs back in after a week.
