Re: Custom vs Custom 5

We definitely need to know what guitar is going into.

LP style? A5
Strat style? A2

I've got an A2 '59/Custom hybrid in my strat and it's PLENTY bright.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

The C5 is my least favorite custom. The original with the small ceramic magnet sounds great. The CC does too, but with a sweeter, fat vintage vibe. Haven't tried the 3, 4, uoa5 or 8, but would probably like them better too. In my LP, the C5 sounded like a T-top. ;)

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

We ought to have a poll of all the popular Custom versions: C, CC, C5, C8, UO C5, & C4 and see how that goes.

Agreed. I finally made my mind about the bridge pickup in my sg (I was always switching between C5 C8 and CUOA5.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

My guitar is and Epi Les Paul. So where does everyone get their magnets? I'm not on eBay.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

I'd never tried a regular custom since a week ago or so, with that coils I tried C5 and CC instead.
I decided to install one on my mahogany Epi Jr. (downtuned two whole steps, with .012 strings). I used there the original pickup (a 16.8K ceramic 8), a 59, a CC, a C5 and finally a GFS Mean 90, the latest was the best (the C5 was the worst sounding).
But the Custom... won hands down: I've found the right balance between mid punch, controlled bass and high sparkle although it's not fizzy at all.
I suppose it works best with warmer woods anyway.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

BTW, has anyone tried the Custom with the big ceramic magnet used in the DMZ Super Distortion for example? any difference?
thank you

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

I had the CC stock in my Hamer. While it had a very nice tone to it, the qualities of a saggy bottom end, lack of aggressiveness and not enough bite kind of did it in for me. Still, it's a great pick up, just depends on what you want to do The best combo together I've ever tried was teh CC/AIIPro neck.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

Of all factory custom variations,my favorite by far is the plain ceramic classic.I would start there and get an A8 and an UoA5 if needed for modding. The custom2 and custom5 seems to me like polar opposites in some cases. From all mids to no mids.Difference is so obvious in the custom wind that leaves me wondering in most instruments I tried it how can this be possible.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

That's what I'm thinking. Ceramics sound stiff and sterile to me.

Being stiff and sterile are your wife's favorite things about me...

But yes - The custom, for all of it's PAF on [insert decriptives here], is definitely a ceramic screamer.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

I'ved tried the Custom, CC, C5 and C8 and the Custom was the only one that lasted any length of time. A very good pickup.

Re: Custom vs Custom 5

Not tried onebut i dont like the increased magnetic pull from a5 in the custom5 so doubt i would like the A8.

Due to the inherent design of the Humbucker p'up's magnetic circuit, the magnet is too far away from the strings to generate any noticeable "string pull", no matter what magnet you put in.

HTH,

HTH,

Id be happy to let you play my guitar with various ceramic, a5 ahd a2 pups and then see if you still believe that. There is a merked difference between them. If you have your pups wound down far away from the strings, I can understand but not with them up high as I have them.
