Custom vs Custom Custom

I've just done the clip comparison from the seymourd website..And I think I prefer the Custom Custom, it sounds more airy and open..the Custom sounds a lil' more compressed. What do you prefer? Do you think the Custom Custom would be boomy in the low-end with heavy dist?

Re: Custom vs Custom Custom

I agree with your evaluation. The Custom is definitely a great choice if you want a pickup that growls, and the CC is a good choice if you want more articulation and "open" sound.

I like them both. The only difference is the magnet.

I don't agree...:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I think the Custom Custom has tons of mids and very warm highs and that prevents it from having the open tone of a pickup with less mids.

It's one of my favorite pickups...but it's warm, very thick and smooth.

The Custom is the exact same pickup but with a ceramic magnet. It's brighter...more highs.

And, IMO, the Custom has a slightly more open tone with more space or air in the mids than the CC...although the Custom has more mids than many alnico 5 pickups.

I love them both and use them both.

As for a pickup with a big "open" tone, that'd be one with less mids. One like the 59B or Custom 5...alnico 5.

Re: Custom vs Custom Custom

I don't know if I'd call the custom custom boomy in the lows, but it's definately is alot looser/flabbier. I prefer the Custom, because I play alot of metal, the custom custom is more suited to rock.

Re: Custom vs Custom Custom

I like the custom custom and custom equally but i prefer the smoother high end that the cc has i found the custom a bit to harsh in the hi end other than that it was an awesome pickup very tight but still had a nive growl. I like the custom custom because it has a nice vocal lead tone, and chords cut through the mix nicely.

Re: Custom vs Custom Custom

I kinda classify the Customs like this, although my examples may not be what they use. Still fairly accurate.

Custom for Metal....think KISS, Metallica, Judas Priest

Custom 5 for Hard Rock.....think Rush, Van Halen, AC/DC

Custom Custom for Blues Rock....think Allmans, Bad Co., Skynyrd

If you think of it like that you know what to expect, and which one you might like the most.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your post has cleared up some mass confusion for me! LOL! (If women were only this easy to figure out!)

Great post!

Re: Custom vs Custom Custom

I just put the Custom Custom in the bridge of my PRS. I doesn't sound great tapped, but if you want a great high gain bridge sound, this may be the right pup. It's got the low mids, but it's pretty soft on the bass compared to the mids and trebel. Very thick sounding, I might like a little more bottom.
