Custom wound STL-2 tele bridge pup from MJ?

I'm considering ordering a custom wound STL-2 (hot tele) bridge pup from MJ. I've seen youtube footage of someone playing a custom STL-2 wound to around 12K, and it was pretty cool sounding for a full bluesy kind of solo with lots of girth but still with a little tele single coil vibe. Does anyone have experience with this kind of pup? Any thoughts on whether I should get it with or without the baseplate under the pup?

Tell us about the guitar that will host this custom wound pickup. Tele, Esquire, Broadcaster/Nocaster style? What neck/Rhythm position pickup, if any? Vintage, stamped steel bridge or modern, machined from solid? Six saddles or three. What saddle material. Yadda, yadda.

My personal preference has been for nothing hotter than 10.5 - 11.0k in a single coil. I would have the metal screening plate but ensure that the air gap between metal and fibreboard is correctly wax potted to minimise squeal.

If you are willing to pay Custom Shop prices, the BG-1400 and the '53 Tapped Tele Lead models should do most of what you say you want. The production line Li'l '59 for Telecaster is another candidate.

Also in this kind of price bracket is the Fishman Fluence Greg Koch Gristle Tone pickup outfit. Try to audition these in person. Internet video demonstrations fail to do them justice.

A 12k Tele pickup...nice! I'd ask to have a tap in there somewhere 6-7k. I'd opt for the baseplate.

i have the '53 tapped tele pup from the custom shop and its my favorite tele bridge pup. 6.5k tap, 9.5k full and both sound amazing.
