friends, i'm really happy with my recent Duncan acquisition- Custom5. i have a high gain setting most of the time & the C5 is a wonderful pickup for the job. no, the C5 doesn't give you stinging midrange like the CC (which i own), neither will it give you a deep, boosted PAF-type tone like the Custom (which i also own), it's an in-betweener. it will definitely appease you hard rock fans out there. blues crunch? the C5 would be your cup of tea as well... have it in my Gibson SG here...

if you are still second guessing the C5 for a high octane job- don't. yes, it can be polite, but it bites as well.

I agree dude. I wanted a pickup that sounded like an 8.5 to 9-ish PAF but with more output/compression. The C5 delivered! I use it through my Dual Rectifier for metal and through my Marshalls for everything else, its all there. I find that the lack of mids can be overcome by either using a pedal with a mid hump (TS9) or adding mids via the amp.

Re: Custom5 for metal? No problems!!

i supplement mine with an EQ pedal, C5 sounds great scooped/ with lots of mids.

Re: Custom5 for metal? No problems!!

I agree!

the C5 is a great pickup under lots of gain - huuuge palm mutes and chords

I have it in my gibbo V - orignally it was a CC, but i didnt like the huge midrange and the loose bass....the C5 just felt right

the only minor gripe i have about the C5 is that leads sometimes sound a bit thin, but overall the pickup is superb clean, overdriven or under high gain

for some samples (both C5 and CC) under high gain, check out my clips here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/ishanmusic.htm

I didn't really like the C-5 in my mahogany Ibanez RG. It couldn't get the mids to grind properly. Sounded nice clean though. I ended up selling it and getting a '59 which was EXACTLY what i wanted.

Re: Custom5 for metal? No problems!!

It's been my 'go to' Duncan humbucker since it came out. I've had it in Les Pauls, Strats, McCarty, and G&L Legacy Deluxe. It's the most versatile hot humbucker because it bridges the gap between vintage and modern. It sounds especially great with EL-34 amps because it lets the amp dictate the midrange tone.
It's my belief that the pickup would be 100% perfect if it was wound just a bit hotter, which would boost the mids just a touch. On UGD, I'm planning on making a nickel overwound C-5 that has a resistance right in between a C-5 and JB....15.4K
I really hope I stumble on the best A5 humbucker by doing that.
