Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

The Drama Dude
A while ago I posted a Deep Purple inspired song called "Mysteries Of The Deep". I recorded it with my Strat, tuned to C# standard, and it had the DMZ PAF Pro and the Ibanez stack used on leads and rhythms. It sounded good, but it was kind of a nuisance to jam to, since I don't normally keep my guitars in C# tuning. So I decided to re-record it, using the Jolly Roger tuned to C Standard.

A bit lower, a bit heavier, a bit more grind and thump. It sounds GREAT.

Here's the comparison:

Original (PAF Pro + Ibanez stack)

New (Custom 8 on the left + Lil '59 on the right)

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

I like the 2nd clip, more thump/thickness/tightness to it which helps for this agressive style of music, great solo! ;) I want a c8 covered pup in gibson sg standard, need to save for a few months tho...

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

Holy **** I forgot how cool that song was!

But yeah, I think I like the new JR in C version best!

Is this gonna be on your album? What's the status on that?

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

I'm not sure if I'm gonna put it on the album or not....it's a lot heavier and more metal than any of the other songs i've penned (Working on two at the moment, should have at least one of them recorded within the next week) But maybe I'll go all Gary Moore on it and try to blend it into the tracklisting better.

or maybe i'll make it like a bonus track :)

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

It should totally be on there somewhere!

What the status on your album? Any idea when it'll be done?

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

Status: in progress. After I put down these next two songs I'll be about halfway done the bulk of the writing phase, I think.

Need to get a few guest musicians too. I also haven't written any lyrics yet, which is scaring the crap outta me. I hate writing lyrics. Also, I need to get a good mic and a better preamp to do vocals with.

lotta crap to do.

It should be done late this year. I'm aiming optimistically for fall, but realistically for november-december.

You're sure you wanna do vocals? I think songs like this one stand fine on their own.

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

yeah i'm gonna do vocals. will probably have one or two instrumentals as well, but a lot of these songs i'm writing with vocals in mind (not patterns or lyrics, but I'm leaving space for them, so to speak)

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

hard to be impartial when i can hear how much fun you're having in the 2nd clip

sonically, ie vibes and tuning aside, i much prefer it.

makes me want to drive irresponsibly!!

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

that's the best thing anyone's ever said about my music!!! Please don't do that though, I can't be held responsible if you crash! LOL :)

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

Dude that's killer. Reminds me of In Flames quite a bit. You need to play this stuff live. It's just what Toronto needs right now. I was at the El Mo on Saturday for a benefit and this would have blown people away compared to almost all the bands I saw. Well done, amigo!

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

haha I will play live again. But right now I wanna focus on writing and recording. After I release it, I'll be putting a band together and rehearsing, assuming I can find some cool people to jam with.

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

That jams. I wish you would have had my Roland GR-33 guitar synth to do the organ parts though. It has a killer John Lord/Deep Purple sounding patch on it.

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

hahaha that's an idea. I was originally planning on sending it to Opeth's ex-keyboardist to record some badass hammond organ all over the album.

a synth would be cool too, but then I wouldn't be able to say that I had Per Wiberg play keys on my album :)

Re: Custom8 downtuned awesomeness

I haven't yet..... But I figure he's not touring with Opeth anymore, Spiritual Beggars is almost inactive, and he has his little web design business on the side. May as well ask him and see what he says. I'm guessing he'll probably dig the music, at least enough to say yes. I haven't actually contacted him yet, but once I have one or two more tunes, I'll send it to him and see if he might be interested.
