CustomCustom TB in bright strat = happy guy now...

Hey thanks Benjy_26 for the suggestion, I'm liking it...backgound is a very bright strat (floating trem & pao ferro board) which needed a smooth bridge pickup.

The CC is not at all what I hear on the Duncan clips, at least the clean tone isn't - must be this axe, it has a nice chimey top end, whereas the duncan clip sounds murky. CC is smoother than the Fred, so no icepicks, hooray. The mids are definately big and sometimes almost too much, but the CC still retains the "open" feel of a PAF-type pickup. Compared to the JB in my SG, it's got more bottom end (surprise there), much less compressed sound, more chime and more output (go figure...must be the guitar).

Only had a chance to play for about 10 min last night, so just one short crude clip on my 'guitars' site, but you can compare it to the Fred clip, big difference....

Awesome. I'm glad you like it. The CC is one of my favorite pups.

What's the wood of the guitar again?

The CC is perfect for bright guitars. I knew you'd like it. It's not bad in LP's either.

How do you like the low end?

Re: CustomCustom TB in bright strat = happy guy now...

The guitar is all mahogay body & neck, so should have some low end, right? Which it does, but it is also bright as hell, whether it's the Pao Ferro fingerboard or the Wilkinson I don't know...the tremsetter locks the trem pretty solidly, but after all it floats so the only contact with the body is through 2 knife edges.

Next axe I build (a year away at least) is exactly the same (love the egonomics) but w/ a hardtail and rosewood! Probably use a Fred in that since I don't quite have the extra cash for the brobucker...meanwhile the cheap as hell Dean icon serves as the heavy blues axe. It's also mahogay.

My criticism of the CC is that you only get the sweet highs in a very small range where the pickup sits CLOSE to the strings. This also creates some string pull. Otherwise, yes the highs are like an improved JB!

Re: CustomCustom TB in bright strat = happy guy now...

I have a CC in one of my single pickup Strats. Couldn't be happier. Just keep it close to the strings and it has plenty of chime and highs. GREAT GREAT pickup...my favorite of the "hotter than vintage" bridge pickups. Lew

Interesting about the string distance - I think it's about 1/8 or so not.

As for string pull, there is so much less than the dimarzio that was in there, or a JB for that matter...an inexact test, the jeweler's screwdriver test, usually it 'sticks' pretty well to a polepiece, with the CC there is noticeably less 'stick' than say, a JB.

Re: CustomCustom TB in bright strat = happy guy now...

Mine is set so close that it's almost touching when the high E is fretted at the highest fret. Humbuckers have very little string pull. Virtually none on the high E because the high E is so skinny there's not enough iron in it to be attracted in the first place. But also because the magnet in under the coils in a humbucker. I don't even worry about it with humbuckers...
