D'Addario NYXL

Re: D'Addario NYXL

The NYXLs get a lot of hype on other forums. I'm a XL guy so it's good to know I'm not missing out on the pricier version. I saw a set at one shop for $20. A bit too much for me.

I remember them being $10, looks like MF has them for $13 now.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I used them for a while, they were definitely improvement for regular EB's and Dunlop strings I used earlier (Dunlops were worst, completely dead sounding).

Now I use Curt Mangans, much better tone than NYXL's and half the price. NYXL's lasted significantly longer and didn't require "breaking in" almost at all. Mangans are fast with that too though.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

Doesn't make sense for me, either. I've found 10 sets of XLs on Ebay for $22. I don't notice that much of an improvement in the new formula to switch.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I've used D'Addario strings for a long time, but tried the NYXLs for the first time today.

After years and years of putting together different string sets to get the perfect tension, I said to hell with it and went 10s on Fenders and 11s on Gibsons. I've since decided that was too complicated and now everything gets 10-46.

The NYXLs went on the '62 Les Paul (after an overdue board oil and fret polish). Acoustically they don't sound that different, but plugged in, it sounds a bit bigger, like there's more signal hitting the amp. They also got in tune more quickly and seem to be holding pretty well, with no stretching. I'm not thrilled with the price difference, but my time is split between a mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, and a couple other electrics, so strings don't need changed as often as in the past.

Anybody else have an opinion?

I’ve used Orange XL’s (10 gauge) for the better part of 12 years. I tried a set of the NYXL’s and found little to no difference based on the extra money you spend on them so I went right back to the XLs.

As far as the tuning. I feel a lot of that kind of relies on the quality of guitar nut and tuner heads and not so much the strings after they have been stretched, but just in my opinion.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I found little difference and couldn't justify the cost. Continuing to use the Nickel Wound D'Addario 10-46s

Re: D'Addario NYXL

Tried NYXL, I thought they were good, just not fantastic, I still enjoy my Ernie ball slinky coblats.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I don't need to string multiple guitars habitually so I live the dream with my $12 custom sets. The treble strings are balanced tension wise to each other and so are the bass stings but bumped up a few pounds for increased bass and the perception of being balanced or slightly tighter than the treble strings. I use all XLs and NYXLs for the 4th and 5th string. I play in D standard and I've learned all the notes.

D 0.0100 in. 12.88 lbs XL
A 0.0135 in. 13.17 lbs XL
F 0.0170 in. 13.16 lbs XL
C 0.0280 in. 16.76 lbs NYXL
G 0.0380 in. 16.63 lbs NYXL
D 0.0520 in. 16.78 lbs XL

When I went to a Chain Guitar Store to pick up Elixirs I asked what else did they have that was warm and Phatt sounding ...

To try something else in addition - there must have been a Push to sell those NYXLs...

I like the way they are not individually wrapped and get tangled up easily ...

Changed my mind - on second thought I think it's- -a pain in the ass that they get tangled up...

Also they are not made to be warm and Phatt so that could be Sales Guy not paying attention.
Color Coded ends- color me unimpressed.

I know you've stated before on past threads, but what's the reason you have the nyxl for the 4th and 5th?

Re: D'Addario NYXL

Some warm juicy tone in the middle of the set, then more of the defined raw material for the treble strings and 6th string.

Re: D'Addario NYXL

I put mine yesterday in my 339. I like them. It's hard to compare because I had 11-50 strings and dropped them to 10-46.
They quickly settled in. But that might be because I'm awesome at setting my guitars up. :D

So far, so good.

I put a set on my 7-string a while back. They're ok, but for the price, I think I prefer the EB Cobalts. Or for less, the regular XLs.

Hey Demanic, I've never tried the Cobalts. Do they really give a more powerful tone? And do you feel they are worth the extra $$?

I like the Cobalts the best out of all the strings that I've tried. They seem to have more meat to them soundwise without being overly bright, even while new. They almost feel like a coated string, or rather the way that a coated string wishes it felt. If I were changing strings every month on several guitars, I might be tempted to switch back to regular D'Addarios, or their EXP line, but since I now usually go a lot longer between changes, I don't mind spending the extra cash.
Though at some point I may give the EB M-Steels a shot. Especially on my one guitar with a Floyd.
