DADGAD tuning - anyone know any good tricks in this tuning?

I'm getting into a lot more acoustic stuff these days and it took me a while to realise that an acoustic guitar is actually a very different instrument to an electric!

Anyway, that aside, I got wind of the tuning DADGAD recently (if I remember it correctly) and I was just wondering if anyone used it much and what kind of cool nifty tricks there were in a tuning like that?

yep barre chords are a snap......just place your index over all the strings...then add your ring finger on the G string a tone (2 frets) higher.....not to mention just playin ght barre itself(without the ring finger) is a Sus2.....i think.....either way you have to really mess with it yourself to figure out how everything works...it really testes your knowledge on the strings.

That's too wierd. I just tuned my guitar to DADDAD and messed with it for about thirty minutes BEFORE I saw your post. I may have been looking for your tuning when I landed on this one, although it gives chords a nice droning ring.

One of the big ones is to remember that your three middle strings...a, d, g...are the same as before, so you can find "a" string "power" chords in the shapes you're used to.
The other thing is to selectively mute the strings...sometimes it's very chimey and nice to let them ring. You can get nice call and response things going by playing the first phrase on the two 'a" strings, and the response on the three d strings.

PS...Look up Al Petteway and Zan McCleod(sp?) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to find out how soulful and generally kickass this tuning can be.

Just remember that almost everything toggles off the G string 2nd fret. When that's fretted, you have that open D chord. You can create a lot of cool chords simpy fretting nearby strings, as long as that G/2nd fret is covered.
