Tell me more, what's it loaded up with, what's it weigh, how much do these little beauties run???? I need I need I need I need I need!!!!!
Burstbuckers 1 and 2, weighs in right at 9 lb even (the other ones were all between 9 and 9 lb 4 oz.) and they matched the 1995 price that ledzepp29 got from Daves. 'Nuff said.
Here's the kicker, none of these 4 had some of the tiny little flaws that my R8 had when it arrived. The R8 has a little reddish bleed through on the neck binding (but hey, so did the original ones from the 50's) and a tiny bit of orangepeeling on the finish around the skinny edge of hte headstock top. Only a tiny bit, not enough to warrrant sending back a great player.
The refins only had one flaw that I could pick out. Some of the fret markers on 2 of them were a bit too "aged" if you will. Some were done with what looks like the Classic inlays while some, like the one I bought and the R8 and R6 I have, were more white/silver on the inlays.
So, I'm in there, dealing with Bruce and Steve and the regional Gibson rep is in the house at the same time. I had a nice conversation with him while Bruce was digging up all the Refins. I expressed to him how utterly crappy it was that these little guys were getting squeezed like this. He agreed with me that he thought it wasn't cool either, but he doesn't make the rules. He told me that he was hearing it from everyone, everywhere he went.
As I was leaving, I went back up to him and told him once again, I didn't want to buy a 2 to 3 thousand dollar guitar from WalMart, errr. GC/MF. I thought it was bad business all the way around. And, if this is what they do with 2005 models and beyond, I'd be concentrating on buying used from now on, or picking up NOS 2004 models from dealers I could trust. The entire time Steve was standing behind the guy giving me huge thumbs up! It was pretty amusing.
