Well I actually don't use the amp as intended. I like to crank the volume round 1-3 oclock and the gain round 9-11oclock.

Which doesn't really bring it to high gain. Well 11oclock gain does, but I havent been going there for awhile.

I like the early breakup, lately I have only been using it as a crunch and not as a gainy monster

Maybe there is my problem, but I still feel for a decent tube amp, it should be able to handle all stages of drive.

Hmm I have my gain at about 1 o'clock, my volume is only at 9 though. Maybe try a set up more like that? Also, have you made sure your cable(s) are all working properly? That might also be an issue if they're giving the amp a crappy signal.
