Daron Malakian's amp choices.. wtf?

I just cracked open the new Guitar One, and noticed there was something from System of a Down's Daron Malakian in the "In Session" section. So looking at his gear choices to clarify that he does in fact use Mesa Rectifiers and possibly Bad Cat amps, which as far as I know he's sworn by, or the Marshall ModeFour, I saw "Marshall, Divided by 13, and Watkins." WHAT ARE THESE LAST 2 BRANDS, and why, according to this article, has Malakian been relying on these for years? WHAT'S GOING ON?

Not surprising. Many times artists will use "high end" or "boutique" pieces of gear in the studio and then go on the road with higher production pieces that might be either more durable or more easily replaceable if needed.

watkins? if they're the watkins i'm familar with, they've been around longer than your dad :laugh2:

british company, started 60's or 70's as a big scale producer, started up again late 1990's with a more boutique approach..

characterised by wedge- shaped amps, i remember the 'dominator' was in their boutique range...

He's often mentioned a solid state Carvin as a key piece of his studio tone, as well. (SX100, or something like that).

If I remember correctly, he won't gig it because it's so beat up he's afraid it'll fall apart.

this is such a surprise though... what happened to the Rectos?

So far as I know, he's always used multiple amps. Toxicity and Steal this Album were done with a Dual Recto (main sound) and a Marshall of some sort (layering).
