Daughter wants a bass.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Get her something that’s not a Squier Precision Bass V.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

I will add that the Sterlings are a solid choice. I've played a few (funny- I haven't tried their guitars yet), and it is amazing what they can do for such little $.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Also, that Squier has a ridiculous neck width and is the largest, heaviest object ever built.

Yes, I agree. Even with my big hands it's uncomfortable. Our now 16 year-old daughter got one for her birthday a few years go and never really played it because the neck was too wide and it was too heavy. It was a Squier Jazz V. I sold it and we snagged an Ibanez Talman TMB-100 for her. She likes that one much better. She really likes my SUB Ray4. The nut width is like a Jazz and it feels like Precision further up the neck.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

I'll agree with Aceman. There's plenty of decent Ibanez basses in pawn shops. Or Yamaha or Schecter. For way less than what they're worth.
Nothing wrong with the Fender, but I picked up a small room gig ready Peavey TNT 130 from a pawn shop for ~ $150.

I was absolutely shocked how good the Yamaha lower models are right now. I A/B'd them to basses 4x the money and couldn't tell.

Stellar basses -that would be my recommendation

here are the ones in the 200-300 range that are really astonishing

and especially the TRBX (think they are 350-400)

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Yes I like the looks of the yamaha and I've seen a few Ibanez that I like too. I've had a few Yamaha instruments from electric and acoustic guitars and a keyboard that were all great value. I'll have to give them a closer look. ]

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

I think I found a bass I'm going to get her. She messed around with it for a while and likes it. Its Dean Edge Hammer 4 string. It's all oil finished mahogany body and neck, rosewood board, active pickups. It's not too huge or heavy for her, looks good, feels and sounds good. Dean is a brand I never really considered. I've heard mixed reviews of them but I look at instruments as individuals and this one seems very well constructed. I can get it in a hard shell case for just under 3 bills.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

I edited a photo into the wrong post, lol but there is a picture of the same model 2 posts up

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Ibanez SR300
Used

The Mikro sux
Almost impossible to intonate
Was my experience with the one I had

SCR series crossover
Six string tuned E to e like a guitar
30 in scale

Think smaller bodied Fender VI

Compromise between bass and guitar

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Good choice....Dean is definitely a viable builder in this market. Have no worries about it’s quality.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

I was mistaken about the model that I posted. It was after a day of looking at bashes, but here is the actual guitar. It's a Dean Sledge Hammer made in 2008. It has a single pickup but its specs out otherwise like the one I posted. I havent given it to her yet. I'm going to find an amp before I surprise her with it. It's a really cool bass. I'm excited for her.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Nice!
Have you decided on an amp yet?

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

This is exactly what I'd buy her.

Great used bass with small neck for $300. It also has active electronics.

I'd also say to forget the amp for now. Get her some good headphones and this. https://www.musiciansfriend.com/amp...-modeler-direct-recording-preamp-di-box-pedal

I have that exact same bass, and that exact same pedal. As long as there was a decent PA, I could play any gig in the world with those two things.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Too late. Already bought the Dean. She looked at about 10 other basses after and every one she said "it's nice but I like the Dean better". I may have been able to get a better deal, but this is a nice bass and it's the one she chose.

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

No. I haven't. I am probably going to get one from zzounds on a payment plan but not sure which. I want a smallish combo with an output and a headphone jack, like maybe a fender rumble or Ampeg BA. Open for suggestions

Re: Daughter wants a bass.

Maybe one of the Hartke kick back combos, or Peavey or even GK.
It's been a while since I went shopping for one, but they could be worth checking out.

The fender rumble is a great little amp.
