Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

Do I need pedals to get the sounds or will this just happen?

You don't "need" pedals. Some people like or prefer pedals. Some don't. Angus, for example, gets one of rock's best guitar tone from his fingers and his amp.

Additionally, is you want Slash leads, he was using the Alnico 2 Pro. If you want Mustaine leads, the JB. Still says nothing for your guitar or your rig or how you play. Best thing is to decide on YOUR tone and chase that.

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

If you're traveling down the road of trying new pickups, it's hard to beat the Slash AII Pro set. It's a sweet starting point.

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

Interestingly enough my first set of Duncan's was a JB/A2P I put in my Epi Les Paul. They served me well.

Well, that's not surprising given that the only difference between that set and the traditional Jazz JB set is an A2 magnet in the Jazz.

I grew tired of mine. They were on eBay for a while and I got cold feet and kept them. I think I did simply because they say Slash. The AlNiCo II Pro to me is an all round nicer pickup.

I'll change my mind next time I install them though, I'm sure!

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

Both of these famous sounds are neck pickup sounds...and with an LP, there will be some compromise with the Dave sound. I'd take the suggestion of an Alnico II Pro & JB, and 2 very different amp channels...and a lot of practice.

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

Mincer, are you sure Mustaine was playing his rhythms on the neck? Most thrash guys do all their work on the bridge. I was always under the impression that he used the bridge for rhythm and lead, only occasionally switching to the neck for some of the clean stuff.

Exactly. That had a bit to do with my original question. Just what solo and what rhythm. Bit of open ground to cover.

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

When I made my original suggestion, I addressed it from the point of view of wanting Slashes lead tone from songs like Sweet Child of mine or November Rain etc , which I figure he did on the neck pickup. I also made the assumption that most of Mustaine's most memorable older rhythm stuff was done on the bridge with the JB.
I know that there are other possibilities, but those seemed like a good place to start.

Yep. The funny thing is I basically happened into them because they were what was available when I went to Guitar Center each time. I saw SD ads in the mags so I figured "hey, I've heard of a JB". Then I think when I was looking for a neck I thought "slash uses a A2P, it must be good".

I totally agree for the suggested set (JB/Slash neck) for the OP.

This thread is starting to give me G.A.S.

Want to sell? I'm poor so make it cheap, LOL.

Re: Dave Mustaine / Slash Pickup setup

Watching Dave Mustaine play a few times, he does more work than I thought on the neck pickup. However, his signature set is active, and based on the JB/Jazz. His neck pickup tone is brighter than most. But I thought I'd split the difference in my suggestions.
