David Allen Pickups?

Re: David Allen Pickups?

I believe the Austin Blues are his Texas Specials (overwound) and the Texas Flood is his recreation of Stevie's actual #1 pickups.

I've ordered both. I've been looking for pickups that make exactly this promise for quite some time. I don't even play SRV style, but I'm a fan of his tone and of Texas Specials. I'll keep the Irish Tours around for a while to compare and contrast with those and Texas Specials, and then... sell them.

Re: David Allen Pickups?

Ive been a solid David Allen user for almost 3 years now. I have his pickups in all but one guitar and that's going to change soon. David makes some the finest pickups out there. In his singlecoils are incredible. His Humbuckers are not recreations but building on a great era or tone and his made it his own. Ive played/owned something from most the popular winders and most had something lacking in my ear. David has never let me down, he also has some the best customer service around. He even replaced a single coil without question that had for whatever reason gone batty( come on now it happens even to the best of gear). Im a firm David Allen user. You wont be disapointed

Re: David Allen Pickups?

I'm sorry but I have to disagree.

I had his 60's RnB singles and didn't like them so I sold them on Strat Talk , he's a member there.
I liked the build quality so I contacted him to ask his advice on a different set.
Despite numerous emails and PMs he's never responded.

Great service ? I don't think so.

I spent my money elsewhere.

You gotta wonder when someone creates an account just to enthusiastically plug a brand.

Re: David Allen Pickups?

D Allen needs to find a new supplier of pickup covers, his cream / aged white models have light rings around the pole piece openings and it's bothered me over time more than I thought it would have when I first put them in:

Re: David Allen Pickups?

He needs to make his pickup covers more opaque. His pickups are black cuz he covers them with cloth which leaks through the pickup cover and causes the pickup to turn kinda dingy.

Re: David Allen Pickups?

Drex I joined because of the forum not to plug. No matter who the winder is somebody will always find something negative to say about their product. That being said,,,I've never had to wait more than a few hours for a response. From my experience with David never had an issue always top notch service and product. Been playing for over 36yrs and as far as pickups D.Allens hit the sweetspot with me.

Re: David Allen Pickups?

Im a long time user of Davids pickups, Im not affiliated in anyway I just love good tone. Im now purchasing my 8th se of his pickups and couldn't be happier. Ive had strat pickups,p90s p90 humbucker sized, and humbuckers, and they are just great pickups. Done A/B with many well known winders and most times the pick was always Davids. Theres just something there that the other well knowns don't have, I know there will always be the mockers and scoffers but you can settle and follow the crowd or stand out tone wise, I havnt had any negativity about my sound, Davids one of the nicest guys to deal with also. You can always exchange and return if not happy but Me thinks ya will be satisfied, The difference is pretty big tone wise.: popworm:

Re: David Allen Pickups?

Who are you trying to convince at this point? You D Allen fanboys are worse than the BKP nuts. Worse. For the record, I think the Austin Blues are awesome, and were the only true Texas Special killer I found out of the ten or so sets of comparable single coils that I tried.

Pickup forums are a rough place for someone who tries their best to be objective, and while this unsolicited praise for D Allen is all good and well, those cream D Allen covers are the only I've ever seen that had white-ish rings around the pole piece holes. I hope they got that issue worked out.

Re: David Allen Pickups?

I've used David Allen pickups for a while now in both guitars and basses. They always deliver the tone. My favorites are Dover's for strat: Cheetah's for Tele: Alley Cat's for humbuckers (or Dirty Cat's if you want a little more oomph), and his P-bass pickup will stand with any I've played. Plus David is a great guy and very approachable.

Yet another single-post new member showing up to talk up the virtues of d allen pickups...

Re: David Allen Pickups?

Jeez you guys need to relax. It's ....

A) not like there's not a bunch of DAllen threads with praise already
B) not like tons of brand new users are jumping in on this...only TWO new users posting here in almost a year
C) folks who browse anonymously who may want to create an account to give feedback on pickups they love from a small winder. I've done this.

So let's stop the useless commentary and/or paranoid skepticism.

Back on topic. I've used a set of voodoo69s for a few years now and they are magnificent. Best strat pups I've ever played. They're articulate, clear, chimey, wonderfully dynamic, great quack...etc. and David was great to work with.

Re: David Allen Pickups?

D allen austin blues are the best SRV style pickups, IMO. But Im still skeptical of the apparent shilling.
