David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

That being said, what's the best way for someone to obtain such a sought-after body? If I wanted the best guitar body possible, if money was not an option, where would I go?

Also, if money is an option (i.e. I'm looking to, down the road, spend exactly $1000 on a guitar, but the best possible quality for that price, even if it means I must assemble it myself), what is the best place to spend it (i.e. what business)?

The ONLY way to do it is to get your money saved up, then play every Strat you can get your hands on.

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

You will never get one that way. Seriously man, it's all too unpredictable.

But please, for sake of discussion, assume it's possible, or almost possible. What is the best Stratocaster (SSS, non-locking tremolo, 6 string, swamp ash body, maple neck and fretboard) I can get brand-new for $1000?

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

At a grand, probably a MIA Standard.

Still dude, you're crazy for expecting to get something good without playing a zillion of them, and then taking the great one.

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

...So y'all are better at making guitars than the CS shop then:D

Yeah right.......I wanna see and hear that;)

I never said that, but...

It doesn't matter whether or not, and in this case NOT, I pick up a CS strat or the original 'Black Strat'. Whilst I can attempt to 'Be' D.G.

I'M MOST CERTAINLY NOT.

Therefore, what am I spending my money on?

Answer is...An extremely accurate clone that will not have as much an effect on my playing as the happiness of having the rest of the cost in my bank balance.

And if D.G. is a subscriber here, please make yourself known!

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

I don't think anyone's saying that a modded production line Fender is going to beat or even match the Custom Shop DG Strat for quality.

Fact is though, you can make yourself a pretty reasonable replica for less than half the money. It won't be as outstanding as the CS one, but it will get the job done.

If you need Custom Shop quality, pay the Custom Shop price. If you don't, don't. It's that simple.

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

Well sometimes people think that they can get an ordinary strat great.....
I rather pay once and get the real goods...than having a fleet of ordinaries with nothing but the looks:)

In that case, why dont you pony up and just buy DG's off of him and not mess around with some CS POS. LOL!!!!!

Time to take out a mortgage! LOL!

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

No doubt the DG strat is probably a great guitar built to DG's spec's, but how do I know that the same spec's will meet my spec's?

I'd rather spend that money on a lex666 custom shop strat built exactly to my spec's, not DG's.

I would love to go around listening to a bunch of them. However, I don't have the time. If I did not intend to play a bunch, then, for $1000, I guess an MIA Standard is my best bet.

By the way, how good are the pickups on an MIA Standard versus, say, the Seymour Duncan Vintage Staggered set? Which is better, and by how much? By better I mean more clear, more dynamic, and with a more organic sound.

Re: David Gilmour "The Black" Stratocaster

However, having someone go physically pick out the best (or closest to the Stradivari phenomenon) body wood is not going to happen: not even Warmoth will do it. And I'd think that, given the industry, they already have someone upstream (i.e. as close to the lumber milling process as possible in chain of events) picking out the best specimens anyways.

Nobody can tell before assembling a complete guitar and even then it's a matter of taste.

That being said, what's the best way for someone to obtain such a sought-after body? If I wanted the best guitar body possible, if money was not an option, where would I go?

Go buy all American Strats and Strat bodies on Ebay and the forums, always re-selling all but the two best so far. You can also go through the showroom at Warmoth.

Be fun with non-matching neck pockes and stuff.

Also, if money is an option (i.e. I'm looking to, down the road, spend exactly $1000 on a guitar, but the best possible quality for that price, even if it means I must assemble it myself), what is the best place to spend it (i.e. what business)?

Actually, my money is on Music Man. Of course they don't have a real Strat.

Another safe bet is the Strat copies that Greco made in the 1980ties, the high-numberd models.

Ok, I'll stop derailing my own thread. :D We'll go back to the topic (Gilmour Strat), since I created two different threads to ask the questions that are on my mind.
