Dd,cr,??

So, I have a DD bridge and CR middle in a poplar strat copy. I like to play mostly hard rock, but also some funk and blues, and I want the neck pickup to be something geared towards the latter sort of playing. I love the sound of the fralin blues special but don't know if it would be such a good match given the magnet it uses, which I believe is an A5 compared to the ceramic of the DD and CR. Would this be a somewhat valid option, and in the likely event that it's not, perhaps some suggestions on what pups would work?

You've got the potential there for an amazing variety of sounds. The two things that came to my mind was a Lil59, which plays great with a Cool Rails. (Although my CR is in the bridge.) And also, an SSL-6, tapped, would go good too. (I have all three of those in the Strat in my sig.)

The thing with the SSL-6 tapped is, with it on full, it could compliment the DD fairly well. With it tapped, it would go great with the DD split. Add a switch to tap the '6, and one more to split the DD, and you'ld have a very versatile axe.

Appreciate the advice as always, Artie.

Some interesting picks, in fact, I'll bet the '59 would sound great next to the CR. However, I was thinking something more along the lines of a true single coil to get more clarity when doing blues and jazz stuff. How well does coil splitting work with the minibuckers? If I dropped the '59 in the neck and added one, would I be able to get a respectable single coil sound? Also, any thoughts on the Hot Stack?

I haven't gotten around to splitting any of my single-sized hums yet. Maybe, I'll try it this week. And my first Hot Stack should be arriving in a week or two.

I'll let you know then.

Hopefully, someone else will chime in, in the mean time.

I'll be splitting my Cool Rails and Hot Rails in one of my guitars. Hopefully I'll be able to do that today. If my wife will let me.

Thanks for the input, fellas.

The reason I mention the Hot Stack is that I was also thinking about swapping out the CR for it in the middle. The CR works pretty well by itself, but in 4th postition it doesn't blend quite as well with the DD as I might've expected (Besides, I generally don't rack up many miles using middle pups by themselves). The Lil 59 suggestion got me thinking that if I put something more stratty in the middle for the DD and 59 to go with and hooked up a tap for the '59, it'd give me something a pretty versatile setup. The Hot Stack came up because it struck me as something that'd be able to stand up to the DD and yet work with the 59 also. Plus, I just have a thing for rails (If I used smileys I'd put one here).
