DD/Jazz for X-plorer Pro?¿?

specs...mahogany body w ebony board...

i tried it with the original (500t and the another ceramic at the neck) but didn´t like them a lot...do you think a DD/jazz set would be much better for that axe?

(The tone wizard sugested jb/a2p or C5/PG instead)

You're a metalplayer as I can make up of your choice of pick ups, so what exactly didn't you like about the Gibson humbuckers and what tonal characteristics need to be improved. With that info we'll know a lot more about your desired sound

well...at first...i don´t like a ceramic pup for neck position, at all...and for the 500t...it sounds a little loose...i prefer something thighter in tone...i think it´d need more mids...so...the DD has mids, doesn´t it? i was also considering a custom...but the custom has more bass, so i don´t know how will it sound on a mahogany guitar (...it has to be the best pup for baswood and that kind of lighter woods, imo)

that guitar should be the ultimate rythm axe...and do decent leads...will play throught a dual recto...if that helps

I have to agree with you on the ceramic neck pick up thing. The Jazz which I own myself, has a very creamy distortion which responds every note you pick, thus all mistakes you make. The clean is warm, and full. If you want more inside scoops on the Jazz search for my review, I tried my best reviewing it the best I can and the people that replied found it helpful so I think it might help you as well.

Both Custom and DD will sound great in mahogany, lots of board members have them in their LPs. The DD has more output with more grind, and sounds more suited for harsher Metal like Trash. The Custom has less output, but more bottom end chunk compared to the DD, for the chuggah chuggah effect if you know what I mean, it still has very good harmonics, and sounds very agressive. Don't get me wrong the DD has a tight low end, but the Custom will sound a little more full. It certainly won't mud up. Both are great rhythm pups and very usable for leads, it all comes down which you need more. Oh and both match up great with the Jazz neck

mmmm...i´m not sure....cause sometimes i play fast riffs (prog/death metal) but other times i play slow ones (think of 3 days in darkness by testament)

have been reading to the vault reviews of both pups...now i have no idea of which one should i get...:D:D help please...btw thanks a lot neeradj ;)

i think the DD would be perfect for the bridge. i love my DD in my ex-351. i have stock gibsons in my explorer now, ill eventually be changing the 500t out for another DD or maybe a JB. the explorer definately plays the best, but the ex-351 just sounds perfect with the pickups i have in it. on the other hand, i love the 495r with distortion, sounds great to me. and its greatness there makes up for the not as good cleans.

btw dude- he have some pretty similar guitars- i have an explorer, you have an x-plorer pro, i have an ex-351, you have an ex-400. thats pretty cool

Re: DD/Jazz for X-plorer Pro?¿?

well, the truth is that i´m sellin' my two guitars to buy that gibson pro  ...(i´m going to be the next gearjoneser...:D) i need the bucks for the x-plorer...and I NEED the x-plorer pro, you know what i mean...btw i was going to pm you recently, because of the guitars and musical styles that you like (i think they're pretty similar to mine also), if i was not sure of which pups to get...

returning to the pups...the neck pup, does sound good w/ distortion...yes, but i need a clear clean tone, and thats why i dislike ceramics on the neck...i had a Jazz on a joe satriani axe i had a couple years ago and i loved that pup...the best clean tones for my tastes i can find out there (even beter that the well known air norton...imo) comes from that one...

the bridge position is getting clearer...btw i´m going to order both because of the return policy, and try both the same morning, so i can get a real opinion of which one sounds better to my ears. but i think i will go for the DD. the thing is that the one i choose for this guitar will be the one i´ll choose for any bridge situation (because i want to return to a seven string proyect :smack: )

hey dude thanks for your reply

Hombre!! Un vecino!! Que alegría ver algún español por aquí!!

I can't help you so much with the pickup choose because I haven't tried any of thoose. But i think you should consider that your guitar has a ebony fingerboard which makes it brighter that a rosewood one. So may be your worries about the bass response of the Duncan Custom aren't that important. Also remember that Mesa Boogie are high gain amps. In this case the output of the pickup becames less important to obtain a highly overdriven tone.

Un saludo!!

Que hay tronco!! no sabia q hubiera otro español en el foro...bueno es saberlo ;)

...yes, i´ve consider the fingerboard thing, that's why i´m going to try both pups before i get a real opinion...

btw there are a couple things i´ve realized: what is the real output of the custom? its eq is similar to 500T, so...i´m afraid of changin' one pup for another one that actually sounds pretty similar...

(muchas gracias) thanks a lot....

i see a few guys like the DD for both the bridge and neck. that might be a thought.

he doesnt like the stock gibson neck pickup cause its ceramic and he wants better cleans......so i really doubt a DDn would be right for what he wants

ditto...i´m sure of the neck pup choice...i´m going for the jazz...but i´m not sure of the bridge pup...now i´m starting to think about the jb (the tone wizard sugested it also...) against the DD and the Custom...it seems we like a lot of mustaine/pitrelli live tone also :laugh2:

Re: DD/Jazz for X-plorer Pro?¿?

As I told you, your coming Mesa Boogie will have enoght gain and the JB will give you a more versatile tone. And you still will have a balance output between neck and bridge.
