Dead JB screw coil - Help!

Hey all. I've been lurking around these forums and finally decided to join. Seems like a good bunch of people here. Anyway, here's my problem. I have a JB humbucker with a dead screw coil. The slug measures something like 8.03k DC resistance but I get nothing on the screw coil. I'm thinking that there is a break somewhere inside because when I first opened it up, one of the leads was not connected to the end of one of the coil windings so I reattached it but still no reading.

Is there anyone here that can fix it for me? I don't have the equipment to rewind a pickup but I want to get this one working.

Erik

welcome to the forum

bummer to read your misfortune .... when you say 'no reading' are you meaning that there is no resistance whatsoever, or that there is essentially infinite resistance?

if there is no resistance, that means there is a short in the coil, and yeah, it'll probably have to get sent in for a rewind / repair / etc ... if there is infinite resistance, it would be an 'open' and maybe you could hunt down the break and fix it up yourself

without seeing a good, clear pic, i dont think i can help any better than that
maybe some of the other guys will have god ideas to help you out

good luck

What I mean by no reading is the meter says 0.00. Luckily this JB isn't the same one in my homemade strat style, just one I picked up via trade at a guitar show. Next time I do that I'll take my meter with me. :)

Re: Dead JB screw coil - Help!

Erik, you said it mesaured around 8 k DC on the slug... My JB mesaured 15-16 k between the leads. Is that normal for a JB?

That number is what mine should be when in full humbucker mode. Yes, yours is correct. If you desoldered the red and white and measured each one between either the green and black (can't remember which one goes with the red and white off the top) then you'd get around 8k or a little over for each coil. I'm getting the 8k on the slug but zero on the other.

Well, I talked with MJ earlier today and she'll take care of it for me. I'm also going to have her put a nickel cover on it. This one is going in the bridge position of my Epi Les Paul.

btw - an easy way to remember which wires go together, just remember television . . .

. . . black & white, and color. ;)
