Dead silence... Can anybody help me ?!?!

I was playing for like an hour and a half tonight (through my rack and 2:90 power amp) and all of a sudden my sound just disappeared. There was no pop or harsh/bad noises, it just went completely silent. I dont know if its my Power tubes, power amp transformer, fuse or my speakers... The amp is still turning on and lighting up/humming... Just no sound whatsoever.
Does anybody know what the problem could be??

I have been using my mesa 2:90 into my 2x12 stereo cab, One of my speakers is 75w and the other is 120w, and they are 8 ohms each and I was plugged into the 8 Ohm speaker outs. Could my 75w speaker damaged the 2:90 OR get damaged by the 2:90 ?? I have had the volume at bedroom levels and never blown a speaker before.

This has never happened to me before so I have not got a clue ! Is the 2:90 busted ?? :(

First: Try plugging your guitar into the input of your 2:90 and see if you can hear anything. It won't be terribly loud, but you should be able to hear something. This will eliminate the 2:90 as the source of the issue. Also try different guitar & speaker cables.

Next: You didn't specify what your rack consists of. Do you just have a preamp, or are you running 12+ spaces of FX? If the 2:90 isn't your problem, remove everything from your chain except your preamp & poweramp and test again. If that works, add pieces back to the chain one element at a time until it fails. Be sure to check patch cords at this point.

Re: Dead silence... Can anybody help me ?!?!

Well I have a pretty big rack setup. Preamp, TC 1210 chorus, TC 2240 parametric EQ, Lexicon PCM 80, PCM 81 x2, mixer, Mesa 290 , 2x12 cab.

Everything before the Power amp is working fine, all the input LEDS flash and sense when Im playing. It seems to be the power amp because I tried plugging the guitar straight in and there was still no sound. The power amp fuses are all ok and have not blown.

How do you know the fuses are good.?

Re: Dead silence... Can anybody help me ?!?!

I took them out and checked them... Also the unit is still lighting up and switching on... just no sound.

Re: Dead silence... Can anybody help me ?!?!

Not trying to play a game of semantics...but you "checked" them with a meter.?

So the 2:90 is your basic tube power amp.?
Assuming you subbed tubes already.....
I would power it up, and check all the normal voltages from PT to the out jack(s).

Re: Dead silence... Can anybody help me ?!?!

I'm not sure about this, but the Mesa might have an internal fuse...some amps do. I would call Mesa and see if they can help you.

Got a cable checker?

Bill

Re: Dead silence... Can anybody help me ?!?!

Everything is fine except for the mesa. I have tested everything. Preamp, cables, speakers (which are all fine).

The fuses looked ok, and the front panel is lighting up. There is just no sound whatsoever, its as if the amp is stuck on standby. The tubes arent glowing or warming up either!

It is the 290... I've emailed their tech support. Am waiting back for a response.

I would tackle the easy things first.
You cannot tell if a fuse is good or bad by the way it looks.
Lacking a meter.....Just go ahead and replace them...see where that gets you.

Hmm... fuses I have that went bad had a broken lead in the middle and there was that tell-tale burnt stain on the glass. But they are one of the cheapest components to replace.

Yes...they do show bad... Some Times...but not always. You cannot reliably do a visual check of a fuse.
But like you say, they are relatively affordable.
The last thing you want to do is pull a chassis, look at a fuse(s), pronounce them "good", and then go on looking for something more elusive, give up, and then ship the amp to a tech, just so he can tell you a fuse had snapped.
FWIW...my experience has been that the smaller the fuse, the less they show when they open.
good luck
