Dearmond Gold tone Pickups

Anyone used these in a guitar recently? I've read a lot of good things about Dearmond Pickups, and thought it might be fun to try out a set. I've got a jagmaster project that I want to do something different with, and thought Dearmond pickups might be cool with that. Seems like the best way to do this is just buy a 90's era Dearmond guitar with them already installed. Otherwise, you're laying out buku bucks for one or two pickups on an ebay auction.

Also, were the Dearmond 90's era solid body guitars all mahogany? The Jag is alder, so I'm unsure whether or not the Gold Tone pickups will work.

Re: Dearmond Gold tone Pickups

I had a DeArmond X-155 hollowbody which had Goldtone p'ups. I'm sorry that I ever got rid of it. To my ear they sounded very similar to PAF's, maybe a tad darker.

Re: Dearmond Gold tone Pickups

Goldtones were not popular. I'm not sure why.

I talked to Bill Turner (who designed them) about them and he said he was just aiming for a typical PAF sound. Who isn't? Everyone describes their humbuckers as "like PAFs." It's kind of funny.

I have three guitars with Goldtones and they sound absolutely different on each. On my X-155, they sound absolutely atrocious.

On this thing, they sound all right (lots of pretty pictures!).

On my M-77, they sound great.

I too used to own a X-155 and sold it to help pay for a gr4etsch. In my opinion the "Goldtones" sounded better. now 3 yrs later I finally got some off ebay but somebody desoldered the leads from the base of the pickups and resoldered them wrong. the neck only uses one coil and bridge is in parellel w/ itself. can someone give me a link on how to solder the leads to the bottum of the pickup plate?????????
