Decent FREE recording software?

I got my Toneport UX1 (Courtesy of Reload in 5) in the mail today and downloaded the Gearbox software.

Now I'm looking for a decent and free recording software.

Something simple to use that will allow for layering to 2-4 tracks.

A lite version that allows for an upgrade would be cool as well. I don't know how much use I will get out of it yet so I don't want to commit to a full fledged recording software and waste my money.

Again... something Simple.

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

Reaper.

A second option would be Reaper.

Also, if you're unsure about either of those, you should get Reaper.

That is all.

Yeah.... but that's a $60 investment. Which may not be that much but is more than I care to pay right now. I've heard Excellent things about Reaper and it would be a leading choice if I had some extra to spend.

Of course I know if I go with a free software then I get what I pay for... I'm fine with limitations.

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

I thought Reaper was free to download and use but only cost $60 if you wanted the license and tech support.

Reaper is awesome. There's a nag screen, but it's not a massive issue. I effing love Reaper. Hoping to catch some Christmas money this month to pay for the license 'cause Cockos earned it, in my book. The routing is great, the layout is great, the workflow is very natural, and they're constantly pushing updates.

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

We liked Reaper so much that we licensed our copy and recorded the entire 2nd album with it. Worked flawlessly. Everyone in the band learned to use it. I seriously can't recommend it highly enough.

Very true. I'm just not sure how much I would actually use it in the next 30 days. Work owns me until the last week of the year.

Now I need to find a decent mic so that I'm ready to record some clips.

Pretty sure it just keeps working.

But if you've used it for a month and want to keep using it, why not pay the 60 bucks?

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

Reaper is REALLY cheap compared to other DAWs like Pro Tools, Cubase.
It's one of the most incredible bargains in the software world really

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

I plan to d/l Reaper over the weekend and start some recordings. I will just tweak and play with Gearbox until I find a mic and then I will take a shot at recording clips of my own rig.

Would I be disappointed if I went with a package like this? Or should I just piece it together starting with an SM57 and then a few pieces here and there.

I'm not terribly concerned with getting a good vocal mic. No one wants to hear me sing... But I'd like to play with different mic setups in the future.

Also... What's a decent program for drum loops? Again... I need Simple.

The newest version of Reaper is really good. Even though I have the Logic Express I still use Reaper sometimes. Just for fun =)

When I was taking classes for Audio Engineering, I had a baller Mac tower with Logic Pro, and I still used Reaper.

Anyways, Reaper, Reaper, Reaper, Reaper Reaper, Reaper.

Furthermore, I really like Reaper.

They deserve your patronage.

Reaper,

So at 30 days does it force me to buy or do I just delete and start over?

You can use it as long as you want. I have a client that uses Pro Tools but occasionally opens Reaper up to test things, and he doesn't have a license for it. "You have been using Reaper for 645 days." Then he waits 5 seconds for the screen to go away.

Cool. I will definitely pay for a license if I dig the software.

I didn't want to download right now and then have no time to really use it before the 30 days is up.

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

Has anyone mentioned Reaper?

It's great. and yeah, it's technically shareware, so you have to pay if you want to get rid of the messages and get the license and tech support, but it's a great deal. It can pretty much do anything that you need in a mixing environment.

Re: Decent FREE recording software?

What I like about Reaper is that it looks at the best technology from all the other DAWs and incorporates them. It may not have all the feature set of the latest DAW version that came out last week by That Big Studio, but it will in time.

I'm a Cubase user, myself, but have a lot of respect for Reaper's dedication to quality.
