I had used audacity for a while, and then got reaper. It took about 1 day to know I was going to buy it.
did you get podfarm up and running?
ez drummer lite is a good cheap program (I bought a computer music mag for like $15 to get it)

Yeah I got it up but now my computer is giving me fits!

Reaper it is. And no worries... if I decide to stick with recording my stuff and love reaper I will license it.

I downloaded Reaper last night, and I'll be paying for it soon. Seems like a nice upgrade from Garageband. I just need to test it with my Pod HD 500 and audio interface first.
With GarageBand I was able to use the built in modeling for piano/organ/synth/bass sounds. Any free or low cost alternative VST's I can use inside of Reaper?
I downloaded Reaper last night, and I'll be paying for it soon. Seems like a nice upgrade from Garageband. I just need to test it with my Pod HD 500 and audio interface first.

VST Cafe is a good source of info on free and budget stuff.
As far as good free stuff that I personally recommend, look for Synth1, Oatmeal, all the Elektrostudio VSTi's, Kjaerhus Audio and Togu Audio Line stuff, The Fish Fillets VST's, Lazysnake, Dasample Glaceverb, and RoomMachine 844. Also, Steinberg has been giving away Model E and some kind of virtual plucked bass for free as of late. I definitely recommend Model E, especially since it's free now.

I like the MIDI editing in Sonar better and I use MIDI these days more often than I would like to admit - but as a whole: go with Reaper. I do admit that I prefer Reaper to ProTools. It's a small, bomb-proof little DAW and you can spare precious time with it: awesome workflow and routing, no stability issues even when pushed really hard. If you have some decent recording gear, don't hesitate to use it on your album recording project.
